Wallyhood is a "group blog" with many contributors. However, whenever you see a post written by "Wallyhood", that's Jordan Schwartz, Wallyhood's founder, Editor-in-Chief, Publisher, community manager, janitor, account executive, and chief enthusiast. Jordan has lived in the same little house in Wallingford since 1993. He arrived from points east with his cat, Fourth, and has since been joined by his wife Michelle, son Zevin, chickens Dominique, Winny and Betty and bees innumerable and unnamed. Days find him working on Pathable, a social networking service for conferences and events.

Nohala Playground

Jordan April 20, 2019 12 Comments

Alright, fess up. Whodunnit?

Shortly after the city opened a playground at 35th and Woodlawn as recompense to the neighborhood for hosting a garbage dump … errr … Transfer Station, some anonymous vigilante took it upon themselves to dub the otherwise anonymous play area Dump Park.

Apparently, Apple Maps understands that there are lots of places and businesses out there that don’t have an established means of making it into their database, so they allow anyone to add a place or business to the official Apple Maps list of locations just by submitting a form. It seems this is occasionally …

Wallingford Playfield Update

Jordan April 16, 2019 11 Comments

Karen O’Connor at the Seattle Parks Department sent over an update on the Wallingford Playfield playground equipment upgrade:

Seattle Parks and Recreation expects the new play area to be open by June 15, or earlier. Final design adjustments and severe weather slowed construction.

Due to safety concerns, minor design changes were required. The play structures are the same, but the planned mound under the play equipment needed to be removed. As a replacement for the mound additional play features have been added.

These include:

An Oodle Swing Three musical equipment pieces: Cascata Bells, a Kettle Drum and a Kundu…

Wally Beek Pint Nite

Jordan April 14, 2019 Comments are off

With the warm weather, local beekeepers should be seeing their hives start to clean house and prep for the Spring.

Or, if you’re like me, sweep out the dead remnants of your honeybee colonies from the now lifeless hives, and prep for starting fresh.

Whichever camp you fall into, you’re welcome to come out to the Wally Beek Pint Nite this Wednesday, April 17th at 7:00 PM at Olympia Pizza & Spaghetti House II (4501 Interlake Ave N).

Kevin Gow (the Puget Sounds Beekeepers Association “Neighborhood Captain“) has been organizing it for several years, originally at Murphy’s (a bit on …

PNW Trunk Show

Jordan April 12, 2019 Comments are off

The Pacific Northwest Shop (4411 Wallingford Ave N) kicks off their 2019 Second Saturday of Spring trunk show series this coming Saturday, April 13th. In addition to their regular locally produced merchandise, they’ll have three artisans from the area in store showing their work.

Fusion In Glass: Jewelry from Kyle von Wrangel Kinsey’s Seattle studio will be on display. The description I was sent say that Kyle “works like a mad scientist to meld metals and glass into one-of-a-kind dichroic glass jewelry.” If you’re wondering what “dichroic” means, maybe this animation will help.

Mama D’s Farmhouse Baking Co: Mama D’s …

Mushroom Music

Jordan April 2, 2019 1 Comment

The Chapel Performance Space at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N) gets a steady stream of odd, interesting, experimental performances by local artists, thanks to the Wayward Music Series.

Every once in a while, one performance comes along that sounds so striking that I want to write about it, but I’m just at a loss for words. This is one them. Here it is:

SKINESPHERES
MUSIC of the PLANTS & other earthly dances

Live Music Soundscape by Rocco Strain / Eco-Sensuous Costume Design by Shelby Mae / Choreography by  Iván Espinosa
Thursday, April 4th 7:30 PM

Lockout at Tiny House Village

Jordan March 27, 2019 21 Comments

A management conflict over the “tiny house” homeless encampments, including the “Northlake Village” presently occupying the Seattle City Light land across from Ivar’s in Wallingford, has exploded over the past week, with the residents padlocking themselves in today and barring access to LIHI and City of Seattle staff from entering.

First, background is in order, accurately provided by Nickelsville’s own history page:

Nickelsville came about in response to the sweeps of encampments ordered by former Mayor Greg Nickels.

After six months of  organizing Nickelsville set up on an unused piece of city owned land on West Marginal Way on September …

Troll’s Knoll Swept

Jordan March 21, 2019 33 Comments

The city “swept” the Troll’s Knoll homeless encampment this past Monday. The encampment has been a source of both frustration and sympathy for the neighborhood, but had been what passes for home for a few dozen people up until this point.

The city is required to give advance notice of sweeps, to hold any property removed in storage for at least 70 days, and to provide shelter for anyone displaced by a sweep. According to KIRO, when the city Navigation Team arrived on Monday, most of the 20 or so tents at the encampment were empty, the residents having moved …
