Color Without Fear

Patricia has been an architect in Wallingford for over 30 years. Her Wallyhood role is to provide a forum about Wallingford architecture. Questions, musings, rants and raves about design may be addressed to her. The queries may be pragmatic or theoretical. Energetic blog discussion will, hopefully, follow. She looks forward to hearing from you! Are you thinking about a color change for your house? Perhaps not the exterior, maybe just a room or two? In our neighborhood, you’ve seen strong house…

Update From Monday’s ‘Stone34’ Design Review

A Design Review for the "Stone34" project was held on Monday night at the University Heights Center. We couldn't attend, but reader Mike pointed me to a Facebook page called "Hey Skanska & Brooks: Down In Front" which provided the following recap from that group's point of view: The neighbors showed up in force at last night’s Design Review meeting. Two-thirds of the comments were on our side. They were thoughtful, clear, and substantive. The prevailing message to the Design Review…

‘Stone34’ Next Design Review is March 19

There's been plenty of discussion about Skanska's "Stone34" project in our last post, How Pasta Translates into a "Run Happy" Future. In the comments, reader Abdul posted some of the information he gleaned from the Wallingford Community Council meeting on March 7, including the announcement of the project's next design review, on Monday, March 19: (Excerpted from Wallingford Neighborhood Association 3/8/12 Enews) Skanska presented an update on their “Stone 34″ Living Building project. Skanska has applied for Design Review related to development…

How Pasta Translates into a ‘Run Happy’ Future

This post was written by Heather Snavely, a Wallingford resident and an employee of Brooks Sports, the running shoe company that will relocate to Wallingford once the 3400 Stone Way project is complete. Heather has lived in Wallingford since 2007 and has worked at Brooks since March 2011, and she asked if we could post her point-of-view about the Brooks relocation and the 3400 Stone Way project. Several years ago, Cantinetta Italian restaurant opened in an unexpected place: the highly residential corner…

Updated 411 on the 4111

(Updated: 12/26 9:20 am: I misread the order of things and got "newer" and "older" designs reversed. Corrected flow and opinions on same below.) There was quite a bit of conversation a week ago about the 4111 Stone Way development project, and whether the building design was a "fit" for the neighborhood. One sharp-eyed reader pointed out that older drawings of the building provided in the Early Design Guidance document available on the City of Seattle web site shows a much…

‘Stoneway Village’ gets a new name

Here's an update from the developers of Stoneway Village, including some new photos, and a new name: It’s been a while since our last update and a lot has progressed since then, the building is now framed, the roof is on, brick work is almost finished, the plumbing and electrical rough-ins are about half way through, and pre-drywall and elevator work has started! Whew! We worked hard through the summer and had minimal rain through the fall which really helped get the…

Have you spotted this house?

If you've been on Latona at NE 40th in the last week or so, chances are you've probably seen this house and wondered what in the heck was up with the spots. Well, we learned that Green Canopy is the company behind the playful polka-dots. The Fremont-based company buys dilapidated homes throughout Seattle and renovates them using sustainable materials and by making them energy-efficient. This 1924 house, which they've dubbed "Keaton" after Buster Keaton, will lose its spots by Friday so that the construction crew can put…
