Operation School Bell Clothes Kids and Gives Them Dignity

I’ve probably walked or driven by The Assistance League of Seattle a hundred times, but never bothered to see what went on inside. This charity is run out of two houses on North 45th Street, opposite the Chevron gas station. The AL Seattle runs three philanthropic programs; the Enrichment Scholarship Program, the Financial Aid for Education Program, and Operation School Bell, which provides free clothing for children in need in grades K-5. The Assistance League of Seattle is a chapter of the National Assistance League and it has operated here locally since 1962. The recently declared, State…

Christmas Resolutions

As an atheist, anti-consumerist Jew, I've generally felt that Christmas isn't "my holiday". I feel a little different this year. I know that New Year's is usually the "resolution" holiday, but honestly, it seems to me that if you're going to pick a day to model your year after, it should be one built around family and giving instead of booze and hollering (as fond as I am of all four). The rolling toll of gun-fueled violence this past year in our…

Christmas light show extravaganza

Boy, I'll tell ya, Greenlake resident Jeff Rodenburg has a thing about Christmas lights. Since 2001, Jeff has put on a nightly Christmas light show in front of his home that dazzles NE 57th Street throughout the month of December. The lights are synchronized to music that you can listen to on your car radio (or portable, if you walk), tuned to 102.1…

Christmas Ship Visits Gas Works Park

Next Saturday (December 1), Argosy Cruises will sail its Christmas Ship filled with Dickens Carolers, with a stop planned at Gas Works Park between 8:25-8:40pm. If it's not storming outside, you can hear the carolers sing clear up to where we are atop Wallingford Avenue. Of course, what's even more fun is filling a thermos of hot apple cider, and coming down to the park for a front-row view of the Christmas Ship and accompanying parade boat lights twinkling on Lake…
