3 Years of Mosaic Coffee

Wednesday was Mosaic's third anniversary.  For those of you who don't know, this is a coffee house where you decide how much you want to pay.  And they've been doing this successfully.  For three years.  Kind of restores your faith in human nature, doesn't it? Mosaic is located in the basement of Seattle First Church of the Nazarene, on 2nd Ave and 44th Street,  right behind Dick's.  It's slightly dark and very spacious with lots of old couches, armchairs, heavy tables,…

National Pie Day – January 23

It's that time of year when the rain forces us indoors, depriving us of heat and light from the sun.  It makes us want to buy a big ol' pie and retreat to a remote corner somewhere in the house to devour said pie in three bites. Amy tipped us off that a new cafe has opened in the spot vacated by Starbucks back in April, on the northwest corner of Stone Way and 45th. Sounds like it's called Cafe Approcionta (or something like that) and Adriana tells us it's locally-owned. West Wallingford, we want more details! Does it have wi-fi? Baked goods? How's the foam?' Update: We had the name wrong, it's Cafe Appassionato, and the reports are good. Lisa writes: Caffé Appassionato (45th and Stone) is…

Coffee Contest Winners (and new contest)

Last week, we posted a contest: suggest a new set of poetry for the window of Open Books and we'll pick our favorite and one at random to receive a bag of locally roasted Pangaea Oganica Coffee. At the time, we mentioned that we hadn't actually checked with the owners of Open Books as to whether they would take our suggestions. Well, we did drop them a note and, wouldn't you know it, between the last time we walked by their…
