Frolicking Fun this Friday at the Fremont 5K

The Fremont 5K is easily my most favorite road race in town--it's convenient, it's mostly flat, the weather's usually mild, and it has a beer garden. Undoubtedly, the most humorous part of the event is watching the participants in the Briefcase Relay that takes place just prior to the 5K Walk/Run.  Teams of five are dressed in business attire from the waist up, and each team member runs a kilometer carrying the team's briefcase which, until this year, held the Seattle…

Warm Yoga in a Cool Space

With all the hustle and bustle on the outside, you might not imagine you’d find a peaceful oasis in the small green bungalow next door from the 45th Street Clinic.  Yet once inside, Sutra Yoga and Wellness Center is warm and relaxing.  Even on the dreariest Seattle days, the plant-filled room with brightly colored walls and their signature painted tree helps to lift my spirits and renew my senses, while the warm air takes the damp chill out of my bones.…

University Fitness: Bankrupt

I've gone to University Fitness (45th and Roosevelt) for nearly a year now. After noticing that they hadn't charged me for my February membership, I asked the owner's wife about it on Monday. She told me that she already knew about the issue and it was just a glitch in the system--one that they would soon fix. Stopping off at the gym yesterday for a workout, I found it empty, the doors locked, lights off and a notice taped to the door essentially stating, "We…

Happy Anniversary, Fuerte

We stopped in for a visit with human dynamo Adriana Medina of Fuerte Fitness (one of our sponsors) this past week and got some happy news: they're just 8 members away from being completely filled. In a time when we've seen several Wallingford businesses close their doors for good (e.g., Hollywood Video, Hard Hat Tools), it's great to see a new business do well. And yes, they are a new business, January is their one year anniversary, and they'll be celebrating…

Notes from the Playground – Wannabe Trackster

I went for a run at the park a few weeks ago (before they put up that fence) and paid the price. I hadn’t done a lick of exercise since the new baby. Okay, so she’s not that new anymore, but she hasn’t hit the one year mark yet so I feel like I can still claim her as my exercise exemption. In any case, my pitiful twenty minute run left me hacking some major spittle and gave me a bad head cold.…

We promised you a passel of new sponsors, and we're giving you a passel of new sponsors. Today's welcome goes to Chris Kirchoff, the woman who runs Kirchoff Fitness. The name may sound familiar, since Kirchoff donated a spot in her Seattle's Best Boot Camp class to our Wallingford Senior Center fundraiser auction. If you read Seattle Magazine, you may also recognize Chris as their Best Bootcamp Trainer of 2008. If you're not familiar, though, and you're thinking it's time to…

Free Pangaea Coffee and Sponsor Thanks

We're very happy to welcome a new sponsor to Wallyhood, the fine folks over at Pangaea Organica, roasting artisan, fair trade coffee right in Wallingford. The second best thing about Pangaea is that they will actually deliver the coffee to your door within a day of it being roasted if you live in Wallingford (or nearby). That is fresh and local! Click their logo to the right for more info. The first best part about Pangaea is that they are donating…
