Helping those in need: Wallingford House

Wallyhood reader Kimberly C. writes: With all the discussion going on about homelessness and Wallingford, I thought maybe it would be nice to feature some of the organizations in Wallingford that provide services to the homeless. The ones I know about are: FamilyWorks/Solid Ground and the 45th Street Clinic. Perhaps a volunteer profile as well? Seems like a lot of interest in what is being done locally and organizations to support other than SHARE. Thanks, Kimberly We thought this was a…

Come Share Your Thoughts on Share

The Share shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford opened its doors over a month ago to mixed reaction from the local community. The first of two public forums sponsored by the church to discuss shelter related issues took place on September 18th. If you were not able to attend that meeting, you can read a summary of the discussion or take a look at meeting notes on the church website. At the first public forum, a proposal…

Community poses questions & suggestions regarding shelter

The recent announcement of SHARE's indoor homeless shelter coming to the Gift of Grace Church in Wallingford has left many in the local community with unanswered questions, even after the notification meeting SHARE held last Sunday. As Wallyhood reported earlier, the main areas of concern for meeting attendees centered around the insufficient notification process by the both the church and SHARE to the community, concern over the screening process for shelter residents, the impact to the preschool, and uncertainty regarding ongoing communications…

SHARE Homeless Shelter coming to Gift of Grace Church

I found out last night from a neighbor that SHARE is opening an indoor homeless shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford (2102 North 40th Street). All their efforts are self-managed, run by the homeless members themselves. In addition, the organization…

BBQ with Marco Polo

Wallingford has had an uneasy relationship with the motels along Aurora (see Motel Crackdown, More Trouble at the Italia Motel, Wallingford Inn Madness, Wrong Police Raid, for example). Rachelle and her crew have decided enough is enough. However, rather than flipping them the bird, they're going to flip them a burger. She writes: I am part of a community outreach group at a church off of 50th and Dayton (not quite Wallingford - but close!) and we are organizing a neighborhood…

Homelessness around Keystone

Occasionally, a note or conversation will start in the Wallyhood Forums that seems worth bubbling up to the main blog. Last week, a reader, BMacke, posted this note to the General Section: Ever since the Keystone Church hosted the homeless folks from Nickelsville, several vehicles have been parked around that neighborhood (50th/Keystone/Sunnyside) where people are living in the vehicles. They run generators inside the vehicles and have all the windows blacked out. I've seen police demanding that they move, but they…

Gamble Speaks on Nickelsville

Rich Gamble is the pastor at the Keystone Church that played host to the Nickelsville homeless encampment in October (Nickelsville Coming to Wallingford, Nickelsville Moves On), and he's written this reflection on their experience: I received a call the morning of Saturday October 3, from the community of homeless people known as Nickelsville asking if I could meet with them as soon as possible. When we met later that afternoon representatives asked if they could stay in my church for one…
