Keep Your Babies Cool

As the temperature soared to 90 on Thursday, my kiddos and I took advantage of the Wallingford wading pool’s limited hours and sought refuge in the cool water. Friday’s supposed to be another swelter, and thankfully the wading pool will be open again from 12-7 p.m. Keep cool, Wallyhoodites! (Just a Reminder - The Wallingford Wading Pool is open only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 12-7 p.m. They only open on days that are forecast to be warmer than 70°,…

Earlier this week, we posted a note from a reader asking if there were interest in having a community bulletin board space where kids looking for odd jobs (babysitting, lawn mowing, etc.) could post as could those looking to hire. The response was unanimous and overwhelming, so we've gone ahead and done it: Wallyhood now hosts a Job Board on our forums. Feel free to post what you're looking for or offering. Just click the "Forums" link in our toolbar (or…

Carrie recently wrote: Would you consider doing an article with free ads for neighborhood kids looking for summer employment (i.e. I have a 14 y.o. with babysitting experience looking for work, pet sitting, etc). It might be beneficial to readers and kids. When we were ten, we got our first paper route, and held it for years. Afternoons after school, we'd cruise the neigborhood on foot or bike, and weekend mornings we'd be up with the birds. Once a week, we'd…

When we ran a story earlier this week describing the city's decision to reduce the hours at the Wallingford Park wading pool to Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, noon - 7 pm (Mommy, I Need To Swim), a number of readers suggested that they'd be interested in spearheading a fundraising drive to restore the missing hours. But, they asked, how much would it cost, what would it take? Ever the helpful neighbor, we sent an inquiry to the Dewey Potter at the…

Mommy, I Need to Swim, NOW!

All dressed up in teeny adorable Crocs, baggy swim diapers and those little sunglasses with the strap to keep them on, where's a toddler to go for some summertime water fun this year? The mayor's office announced today that, due to mid-year budget cuts, the Wallingford wading pool will be operating with reduced hours beginning June 30th through August 20th:  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, noon - 7 pm. Green Lake's wading pool (along with those of Magnuson, Lincoln, Van Asselt, and…

Hamilton Construction Update

After nearly two years, Hamilton Middle School's renovation is nearly complete.  Huzzah!  Over the last month, I've noticed a skeleton crew coming in early on Saturday mornings, which leads me to believe they're working pretty hard to wrap everything up.  During the next few weeks, the contractor plans to finish landscaping the north end of the property which butts up against the Wallingford Playfield. Hopefully, this means we'll have that length of running trail replaced soon (thanks to Wallyhood reader Greg,…
