Mayor McGinn wants fireworks for the 4th of July. (So there.)

Following Seafair's announcement on Tuesday, that the Blue Angels would not be coming this summer, Mayor Mike McGinn issued the following statement: A fireworks show on the Fourth of July is a civic tradition. I, like many Seattle residents, was disappointed to learn last week that there would not be fireworks this year at Gas Works Park. That's why I am delighted to announce that we are working with Seafair and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to craft a new and…

Family 4th at Lake Union canceled…or is it?

The announcement on the Family 4th home page almost reads like a bad April Fool's Day joke; and at first, I thought it was a prank since One Reel made the announcement to the media on Monday morning. But as the day wore on, and more media outlets were announcing the cancellation, I realized it was the real deal: Soooo what, that's it? No last minute plea? No pitch to giant corporations? Or is this *final* as in -- sometime in…

This year's Fourth of July celebration falls on a Wednesday, and on the day after, Starbucks will hold the annual "5th of July Lake Union Cleanup" in which volunteers will pick up all the Fourth of July detritus. The full event…

Kalakala sold for a buck?

When my husband and I were planning our wedding in 1999, we considered having our reception at the Kalakala. Back then, the iconic streamlined vessel was berthed on Lake Union, still somewhat structurally sound and open to the public. I had grandiose visions of an art deco-themed party. In the end, we discovered that the Kalakala was only open for fundraising efforts, so we bagged that idea. But we hoped that someone would host a New Year's Eve party on the old…

Center for Wooden Boats signs lease for N. Lake Union site

Back in September we told you about the possibility of having a Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) location over here, on the north side of Lake Union, as a second, complementary site to their current South Lake Union location. Cool, yes? Well yesterday, the Center for Wooden Boats and King County Metro signed an interim lease agreement to make that possibility one step closer to becoming a reality. The lease allows the CWB to use the land, owned by King County Metro,…
