Noisy Neighbors

I'll be honest: I pine for the days when I was a source of noise complaints on my street. I'd try to be a good neighbor, knocking on doors before parties and handing out my phone number in case things got too loud, issuing pre-emptive invites to those likely to be receptive (you can't very well report a party you've been invited to, can you?), but when the 2 am DJ came on, and the floor was flexing underfoot and it was…

Uptown Espresso on the Move

Get your velvet foam while you can! Uptown Espresso looks like it's going to be exiting its spot on 45th about four and a half years after it opened.  An eagle-eyed reader writes: The uptown espresso space is for lease with a move in date of 12/30/15. I don’t think it is publicly listed for lease on the internet at this point, but was listed through a brokerage website on Sept 8th.

Pinky’s Closed

The Rancho Bravo / Pinky's Kitchen food court is now shy one vendor: Pinky's has closed up shop. It's tough to say exactly what happened, as both Freddy Rivas, who owns Rancho Bravo and was a partner in Pinky's until earlier this year, and Khoa, the new owner of Pinky's are somewhat mum. It's possible legal wrangling may follow. From what I understand, Khoa bought out both Freddy and the original co-owner of Pinky's in March. Pinky's may have been undergoing some…

There's a new park going in on Lake Union between Recycled Cycles and Agua Verde. It'll be called Portage Bay Park and will feature "small gathering areas, a picnic spot, informal recreational opportunities, hand carried boat access, natural shoreline habitat, and interpretative and educational elements." It would be better still if it had a rope swing, but lawyers. It's no pocket park- it's a fairly large stretch of land that connects to the park next to Agua Verde. It's being designed…

Correction: Single Family Upzones Are Still Part of HALA

  • Post author:

There was an uproar when HALA proposed to rezone single family homes, as nobody is looking forward to being displaced or living in the middle of a construction zone. The fact is that even if you are supportive of low income housing, few people want to live like Edith Macefield, and many people have an attachment to their home and neighborhood that is more than fiscal. The mayor and city council back tracked, and the Seattle Times ran triumphant stories like "Mayor…

Halloween Planning

Happy October, Wallingford, it's 25 days until Halloween! Big ups to the folks at 4232 Latona for getting a jump on the holiday with the fabulous pumpkin at right. Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays, and I'm impressed with the way Wallingford throws down: big bands of kids in home made costumes going door to door, a sprinkling of haunted houses, and even a bit of reverse trick-or-treating. No wonder Wallingford regularly makes the list of Best Places…

City Fruit Orchard Tour Sunday

On Sunday, October 4, visit Seattle's historic orchards throughout the city. Each orchard is planning special activities, including cider pressings, historical tours, and more. Your self-guided tour will take you throughout Seattle's neighborhoods to a hidden orchard, a former homestead, and other beautiful community sites. Two orchards are in Wallingford: Good Shepherd Center / Meridian Playground and the Burke-Gilman Trail. Look for the pink balloons along the Burke-Gilman between the University Bridge and Northlake Place west of Gasworks. Get your map of the…
