Homelessness around Keystone

Occasionally, a note or conversation will start in the Wallyhood Forums that seems worth bubbling up to the main blog. Last week, a reader, BMacke, posted this note to the General Section: Ever since the Keystone Church hosted the homeless folks from Nickelsville, several vehicles have been parked around that neighborhood (50th/Keystone/Sunnyside) where people are living in the vehicles. They run generators inside the vehicles and have all the windows blacked out. I've seen police demanding that they move, but they…

What’s in a name – an MLK Day Reflection

My full, legal name is Jordan Luther King Schwartz. Kind of an unusual name for a white guy (and a Jew, no less). How did I end up with a name usually reserved for civil rights memorials and streets running through the hood? Back in early 1960's, Jim Crow laws, mandating separate facilities for blacks and whites throughout the South, were still very much on the books and enforced. When Dallas County, Alabama blacks showed up on one of the two…

Joule’s Rachel and Seif on Iron Chef

This Sunday, Joule's chefs Rachel and Seif are appearing on the hit Food Network show Iron Chef, and it sounds like they've got a viewing party planned. From their Facebook page: FINALLY, Joule Iron Chef premiere this Sunday! This is how it's going to go down. Joule is almost booked up for the Iron Chef Joule supper. Tour de Wallyhood

Being a mom of young kids, living in Wallingford is a gift. There are so many places you can go,  on foot or by bicycle, to amuse the little ones and yourself, as the winter days start to give everyone cabin fever. Just the other day, we made a solid two hour outing of walking around, doing a “tour de wallyhood” if you will. We were gone so long that the baby bjorn straps cut into my shoulders, creating semi-permanent grooves. Perhaps I…

InterConnection seeks old laptops for Haiti

  • Post author:

We've always been huge fans of InterConnection (down on Pacific near Gas Works) for their work refurbishing old computers for poor communities around the world, for providing job training for people here in Seattle and for selling really cheap used computers and parts to help finance those efforts. It should come as no surprise, then, that they're offering to pitch in how they can in response to the disaster in Haiti. Ally writes: In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti,…

Get Your Garden On

Seattle Tilth, housed in Wallingford's Good Shepherd Center, has a "dizzying" array of classes lined up for the next several months, on cold frames, goats, mushrooms, tools, perennial edibles and more. These classes do fill up, so if you're interested, sign up now. You're out of luck if you haven't signed up for the January 23rd Beekeeping 101 course yet, for example, but there's still time to sign up for the February 9th Beekeeping 101. They're also seeking a volunteer coordinator…

Bluegrass/Folk Jam Sessions: Mondays at Al’s

In an effort to escape the merciless downpours and warm up with a pint, my sister and I ducked into Al's Tavern (Corliss and 45th) around 9pm on Monday. Accustomed to seeing just a few bearded-and-flannelled men in their fifties and the occasional mutt stretched out under a booth on weekday nights, we were surprised to find the dive bar packed. Then, we heard the music. About five or six bluegrass/folk musicians had crammed themselves, several chairs, guitars, violins and what appeared…
