Happy Birthday, Wallyhood

I almost let this one slip by me: today is the 5th birthday of this little blog: the first article, Welcome to Wallyhood, was published on January 11th, 2009. It's been a nice ride: we've published 3,956 articles and presently, we're averaging: 110,000 pageviews / month 45,000 unique visits / month 18,000 unique visitors / month Not bad, considering Wallingford is about 20,000 households. The blog is evolving, and honestly, I'm struggling a bit with the direction to take it. It…

Seamonster Devours Boulangerie

After 33 years at the La Boulangerie (18 as master baker and owner), Xon Loung is losing his lease on his little corner bakery on 45th Street. As he tells it, back in July, the building owner, Yasuhiro Narai, visited him in his store and asked him his plans. His plans? Keep working! Loung has operated Boulangerie single-handedly for the last 14 years (after his "woman left him") and at 65 years old, he felt he still had a few years…

Ramen Man

I finally made it to the new ramen joint in Wallingford, Ramen Man (1616 N 45th St). I pronounce it delicious. It's a small and simple shop with just four tables up front (and a few more tucked in back), but the food exceeds the digs. The menu is simple: they do ramen, but certainly not the freeze-dried noodle kind you may remember from college. It's a rich bowl of hearty, creamy goodness. It was so creamy, in fact, that I assumed…

Don't forget, today is the last day of Scarecrow's 25th Anniversary Sale, which includes a free rental for all customers and 50% off their used titles. Perhaps the largest independent video store in the country, they're feeling the effects of Netflix, iTunes and Amazon and could use your support. Stop by and say hi!   (Scarecrow is a long-time Wallyhood sponsor.)

Coats and Gloves

Barb writes: We live in Wallingford and are putting out a plea for gently used adult coats, gloves, hats, scarves and/or anything to keep folks warm in cold weather. Looking for new adult socks too. We'll be collecting these until December 20th. Then on Saturday, 12/21, Steve and I will distribute them around to homeless folks, living on the streets, in the Seattle area. If we have anything left (and we doubt we will), we'll drop them at the usual spot which is the…

Scarecrow On the Ropes, Celebrates

In the age of Netflix, iTunes and the cleverly named "Amazon Instant Video", when Blockbuster Video has gone bust, is it any wonder that the video brick-and-mortar icon Scarecrow Video should be up on the ropes? Sort of. I mean, there are about ten bazillion videos out there, and Scarecrow carries about 120,000 of them. By contrast, iTunes has about 3,500. But, on the ropes it is. Rentals are down 40%, and, according to KOMO, "store officials say this holiday season could be…

Chicago-Style Pizza Showdown

Perhaps a day late and a dollar short for the late Wallingford Pizza House, the Iron Bull (2121 N 45th St) is marking the visit of the Chicago Bears to Seattle by asking the burning question: "Who makes the best Chicago style pizza in Seattle?" Gerald writes: You be the judge! On December 3rd at 7 pm, the Iron Bull will host a Chicago Style Pizza bake off, featuring the pizza chefs from Benitos in Ballard, Delfino's in Seattle and who ever else…
