Update: The house damaged in the fire is located at 3626 Corliss Avenue N. The garage at the back of the house is on N Pacific Street. A mid-morning house fire adjacent to 2326 N Pacific Street, between Sunnyside and Corliss, prompted a large response of emergency vehicles and the closure of a block or so of Pacific for about an hour this morning. When I passed by on the BGT on my bike at 10:30 am, there were about half…

The greater Wallingford area has added several breweries and taprooms in the past few years. For example, there’s Gasworks Brewing down on Lake Union, the Figurehead taproom over on Stone Way, and Jellyfish on Green Lake. What am I missing? Predating all of those, barely, is Ladd & Lass Brewing, located at 722 NE 45th Street just across I-5 in the U District. On Saturday and Sunday, January 10 and 11, L&L will be celebrating their fourth anniversary, and we’re all…

Holiday lights brighten Seattle’s big darkness before and after the holiday season, as lights often go up in late November and may stay lit well into the new year. Electric holiday lighting was made available to everyday people in the 1920s and 30s, coinciding with…

Wallyhood Waters: The Big Dark!?

A Wallyhood Waters series Every winter season, I read about Seattle’s “Big Dark,” the time when the sun starts setting before 4:30, and our nighttime is longer than our days. Despite this, I can’t recall seeing a dark, starry night in a long time. This is because Seattle is in a perpetual state of dusk due to artificial light at night (ALAN). While our wintertime lights make us feel safe and bring us holiday cheer, I recently learned that they also…
