Just in time to add some festive color to your holiday cocktails, Seattle Public Utilities announced that they are... ...making adjustments to water operations that may temporarily affect drinking water in some North Seattle neighborhoods. If you live in the potentially affected area (shown in orange on the map), you may notice your tap water looks discolored at times over the next few days. The water is still safe to use, and the discoloration should clear on its own within 1–3…

One of my favorite Advent experiences right here in Wallingford

“Advent” comes from the Latin word meaning “arrival.” In the Christian calendar, Advent is a four-week period that prepares people for the birth of Christ on Christmas Day. I was not raised in a particularly religious family. I was baptized Presbyterian and attended Sunday school for a couple of years when I was little. Later, I married a lapsed Catholic who chose not to continue the faith he felt was forced on him. While our household leaned more toward a Santa…

Retiring in Wallingford: Weather or Not a White Christmas

This month marks my third anniversary at Stonehedge here in Wallingford, a place I researched and made accommodations for so I could retire here, near my daughter. She actually found the apartment, and I signed the lease that December, even though I wouldn’t move in until February. I had already sold my home in Glens Falls, New York, with the closing scheduled for February 6th, which meant moving out when there was snow on the ground! After more than 40 years…

All of them are extremely well run, and going to watch a game, meet, or match is a great way to support the athletes and have a blast!  Many teams have home games at Lincoln High School’s gym, and any and all supporters are…

What’s Eating Our Lawns?

After being away for about five years, I recently moved back to Wallingford—Tangletown, this time, instead of lower Wallingford. Almost immediately, I noticed something peculiar on my walks with our dog: everywhere I looked, lawns were torn up. I’m sure you’ve seen it, too. Tufts of grass uprooted and tossed aside, exposing the dirt underneath. On one neighbor’s lawn, it was pulled up in long mats, as if someone had rolled up turf. After just a week, I spotted crows at…
