The Calendar: BF Day, District 6 Debate, 4-H Poultry

Eric June 5, 2015 14 Comments

The Meaningful Movies @7 on Friday features money in politics, including representatives from wamend.org pushing I-735. A question will be granted to the highest bidder.

BF Day has a meet and greet on Saturday at 10:30 at the school: Meet Principal Jaskot, PTSA members, and have light refreshments. Contact [email protected] with any questions.

The Phinney District 6 debate is from 2 to 4 on Saturday at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, sponsored by the Phinney Ridge Community Council. Or you can just wait until next week when we’ll be running a District 6 Wonkathon on Wallyhood! Yes, no more flailing about …

Best Non-Jhanjay Vegetarian Options in Wallingford

Eric June 4, 2015 42 Comments

I struggled with this post as there’s not a lot of data to back up the opinions here and I’m really not looking to hurt local small businesses by pitting one against another. On the flip side, a review that doesn’t do comparisons isn’t that helpful or interesting, and our family has eaten at most of the local places and has opinions. In the end, I wrote it as though giving somebody advice, but keep in mind it’s just the view of one cranky middle aged vegetarian with an untrained palate:

Pub foods: Elysian Brew Pub beats out Blue Star, …

Transportation Alternative Mode Wars: Fight!

Eric June 2, 2015 23 Comments

Traffic is why we vote for transit. If it weren’t for traffic we would cut pollution by focusing on mileage standards, we would offer free Car2Go passes for people who can’t afford a car, we would offer accessible van services for people that can’t drive. A lot fewer buses and no trains would be needed if it weren’t for traffic.

If the main goal for transit boils down to coaxing people out of their cars during rush hour, what’s the cost / benefit ratio for each transportation alternative? To figure it out, I calculated how much taxpayers subsidize each individual …

Why Isn’t Olympia Pizza More Popular than Tutta Bella?

Eric June 1, 2015 39 Comments

You can look at a restaurant strictly in terms of things that need to be good: how stuff tastes, what it costs, how clean a place is, and whether the wait staff is nice. Moving beyond that, restaurants are like a Rorschach test for your individual personality. How fussy should the food descriptions be? How crowded should a place be? What’s the right atmosphere? Do you prefer trendy or established places? Do you like attentive wait staff that make suggestions, or would you prefer to interact with a Ziosk at an automat?

For me, Olympia Pizza hits the sweet spot. …

Click Bait: Pick Our Upcoming Headlines

Wallyhood will be much better if we can limit Move Seattle Levy coverage to one day per week, so please let us know if you’d like to help us with our issues. I mean Wallingford’s issues. The best articles often come from neighbors with fresh perspectives, so our favorite articles are the ones you write for us (thanks again Jeff!)

Alternately, help us figure out what to write about next by completing this poll or suggesting a headline in the comments. Thanks!…

The Calendar: Whitingford, Runner Invasion, & Hamilton

Eric May 29, 2015 8 Comments

Yo yo yo homies! It’s time to get down with the Wallingford Calendar.

The Meaningful Movies dwells on our whiteyness with “WHITE LIKE ME” tonight at 7 PM, a discussion of “what it means to be white in a white society, run by whites, for whites. Plus how easy it is for whites to be oblivious to all the obvious advantages and more subconscious perks and less well-known benefits that come from being part of this “normal” group.”

Expect a communal conniption as liberal whitey town dwells on its whiteyness. Hey, at least we didn’t gentrify this place (take that, …

Wallingford Post Office Cleanup: Get Jeffe

Eric May 28, 2015 28 Comments

Thanks to Jeff Lindstrom for writing the following for us after discovering that writing for Wallyhood can be like not just getting Jesse, but being Jesse:

Neighbors.  Love them or not we all have them.  Some are life-giving to our neighborhoods, like Paul down my street whose parking strip is always so beautifully planted, or the neighbors who occasionally repaint the huge ladybug in the intersection of 49th and Burke.  Others well, let’s just say we relish the day when the For Sale sign goes up.  However, some neighbors won’t ever move, like the Post Office.

I’d been driving …
