Weekend Debate

We are often accused of bias on social and political issues here at Wallyhood, a charge to which we* delightfully plead guilty. Yes, we have opinions and we're not afraid to share them! We hope, however, that we are clear about when we are reporting facts and when we are reporting opinion, and that we give a respectful forum to those who hold different positions. What would you think about expanding and formalizing this civil discourse on important issues? Here's what…

Ulysses 2.0

If you've passed the stairwell at the bottom of 4th Ave NE leading down from NE 40th to NE 40th* over the past few weeks, you may have noticed a film crew at work. Perhaps you wondered what they were filming. We were, too, so we asked: it's an independent film, Ulysses 2.0, being produced by the Citizen Lebowski Project, a "a cinema-based laboratory for citizen-artists" associated with Cornish School for the Arts: For better or for worse, one of the most…

Kong Cooks

Nancy Leeson over at the Seattle Times wrote a wonderful piece on Christopher Kong recently, Southeast Asia an inspiration for Seattle chef Chris Kong. She followed the Roosevelt High grad from his time scampering around the kitchen of the restaurant his parents opened in to his internship with Trophy Cupcake and a Ballard fish market to the kitchens of Kuala Lumpur and, of course, back to the restaurant his family runs here in Wallingford, Perche No Past and Vino. After you…

Green Lake Gobble

More than 1,500 runners are expected at Green Lake Park this Sunday, Nov 20th for the Green Lake Gobble & Mashed Potato Munch Off. In case you need some inspiration, there will apparently be runners dressed as turkeys to chase and a competitive eating competition, the Mashed Potato Munch Off. Attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food for the Union Gospel Mission. My Green Lake has the full story, including appetizing video from 2009's Munch Off.

Gypsy Squares Square Dance

This Friday, swing your partner and dosey doe Gypsy Squares-style. The Gypsy Squares along with the Rabbit Stew String Band hold an old-fashioned, foot-stompin' square dance at the Gypsy Cafe (3510 Stone Way N.) The hoe-down happens every third Friday of each month from 8pm - 11pm. "No experience is necessary as live callers ensure everyone knows what to do and when to do it," according to Alex from the Rabbit Stew String Band. The Gypsy Cafe is a great all…
