Cyclocross this Sunday

(This post originally appeared in My Green Lake): What is cyclocross? Cyclocross is a bicycle-related sport combining the fitness of road riding, the technical bike handling skills of mountain biking, and the finesse of running all in a 45-60 minute event. Typically, cyclocross-specific bikes are used (looking like a road bike, but with a wider, knobby tire, and good mud clearance at the brakes). Mountain bikes can be used, too. Dorpat Complicit in Ivar Scandal

In our imagination, Paul Dorpat, Wallingford historian and Santa-look-alike, sits in a squeaky, sagging wooden office chair, looking across an overflowing, stained desk at a man in a stetson hat and a crisp, brown suit. A lazy fan eavesdrops from above, and the whole room is inexplicably washed in sepia. "These documents are phonier than a three dollar bill," Dorpat croaks, tossing a manila envelope onto the desk. The man in the suit doesn't blink, just stares Dorpat stony-faced in the…

School Petition

If you've got kids, you're probably too exhausted at this point in the night to be reading this blog. But maybe you'll be up at 4 a.m. like we are with Baby Z, and you'll see it then. Either way, that would give you enough time to sign this petition that some Wallingford parents have put together asking for a change to the new school boundaries. We both share a deep respect and admiration for our fellow veterans and active…

A Call to Action: The Senior Center Needs Your Support!

(Wallyhood welcomes a new contributor today, Erin Leach-Kemon) After 30 years, the Wallingford Senior Center was forced on Fri, Oct 30 to let go of its primary staff and to scale down its senior services to just a few remaining programs due to a continual lack of funds. A final decision on the Center's future is scheduled to be reached just before Thanksgiving. In an effort to raise money and to demonstrate the community's commitment to the Center, the Wallingford Chamber…

Wallingford in Autumn Photo Contest Results

Back in early October, we announced a week-long photo contest, themed "Wallingford in Autumn", in which we promised to award a bag of Pangaea Organica's Wallingford-roasted coffee to two winners: best overall photo and best photo taken with a mobile phone. The weeks dragged on. At one point, we pretended that we were intentionally extending the contest, but a reader called us out on our laziness. Well, the long wait is over folks, and we hereby announce the winners: Also, because…
