Wurst Festival

It says something that no less than five people e-mailed us today to make sure we knew that the free Wallingford Wurst Festival is happening this weekend, and not one of those people are involved in putting it on, just excited attendees. That said, we're not quite sure whether Sara was encouraging us, warning us or threatening us when she said "Wait 'til next year when Baby Z will want to go through the bouncy house at least 20 times!" From…

Baby Maarten’s Yard Sale — Thanks Wallyhoodies!

This report sent in by Lower Wallingford Correspondent, Chris Witwer. A few weeks ago, we reported on a then-upcoming Yard Sale to benefit Baby Maarten, a young Seattlite who is suffering from brain cancer.  The sale was a huge success this past weekend, in large part thanks to the generous donations of Wallyhood readers.  Many of you donors asked for an update following the sale.  Here ya go: While online donations are still rolling in, the cash total so far is over $6,500.  …

Vintage Seattle: Good Shepherd

Rochelle forwarded us a link to this post by Jonathan Shipley on the Vintage Seattle blog, a look inside life at the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N) back when it was a "home for wayward girls": Residents, in those early days, rarely left the grounds, could not excuse themselves from the nuns sharing with them those experiences of sweet virtue. Bars were in the windows. There was strict adherence to scheduled – waking, teaching, working at the laundry downstairs,…

Notes from the Playground – What’s that Smell?

(Sharon continues her Notes from the Playground series) We took the kids to the park this afternoon to enjoy the last days of summer (ok, fall). Per my son’s request, we split up before heading in. He and I took the south entrance near Hamilton Middle School and my husband and daughter went in by the wading pool. As I approached the merry go round, I saw my husband snicker. He walked over to me and asked if I could smell…

Lower Wallingford: It’s Gonna Be Loud Tonight

This report sent in by Lower Wallingford Correspondent, Chris Witwer. What is up with the sound stage & loud electric music on Wallingford Avenue, just below 34th?  It seems that the little cul de sac there has been blocked off with "road closed" signs and a music stage has been erected. At 2:45 pm today, some very loud, electrified rock bands did a sound check.  My partner (working from home at 35th & Wallingford) wandered out to see what's up.  She was…

Notes from the Playground – Finding Hugh

(Our new contributor Sharon continues her series of vignettes, revolving around the Wallingford Playfield) On the way out for our nightly family walk a few weeks ago, I found a flyer in our mailbox about a lost cat. Hugh, an adorable gray kitty, lived a few blocks away and was greatly missed by his family. I was reading the text aloud when our son came bounding out of the house and snatched the paper away. “Why do you have a picture…
