Celebrate the original “Brexit” at Gas Works this Monday

Unlike Brexit, things moved swiftly following the vote for Independence on July 2, 1776, formalized by the adoption of the Declaration of Independence just two days later. The Founding Fathers were so pleased with themselves that John Adams foretold of celebrations for generations to come that would include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other". But because Adams believed the holiday should be occur on July 2, he was known to turn down invitations…

How’s Wallyhood 2.0 going so far?

As many of you are aware, Wallyhood was "reborn" in the beginning of April, following the outcry of Jordan's attempt to "sign off" from the blog back in January. Since then, we've had 4-5 volunteer rotating weekly editors and over a dozen volunteer writers help keep the lights on! Thank you to everyone who has stepped up to contribute to this community resource, during a time when it seems like just about everyone is over-committed or simply too busy. It seems like a good…

Happy Meow-ther’s Day!

Looking for something different to do with Mom that is guaranteed to lower everyone's stress level? Treat her to a day out at Seattle Meowtropolitan, Seattle's first cat cafe, where today's visit is 15% off and includes 50 minutes with kitties and a cafe beverage! Regardless, entering the tranquil lounge was a…

Questions for the District 4 and 6 City Council Finalists?

We're looking to create an updated Wallyhood candidate Q&A for the general election, with these goals: Surface differences between the candidates Where possible, cover Wallingford specific (District 4) or Tangletown / Fremont specific (District 6) issues Cover the key areas of revenue reform, transportation, low income housing, neighborhood planning, and priorities For District 4 (Wallingford) our primary Q&A favored Tony Provine in online votes. Unfortunately, Wallyhood doesn't have the pull of the simple minded socialists at The Stranger, who we wish would move…

Teacher’s Union Negotiation Update

The Seattle Education Association had a membership meeting last night, including not just teachers but specialists, aides and office workers - really everyone who interacts with kids at SPS. The union and the district have been negotiating since May but have decided nothing much at all so far, about 2 weeks before the start of the school year. Kind of a bad position to be in- ideally there'd be a contract to vote on at this point, even if the vote…

(PARK)ing Day Applications Due

PARK(ing) Day is a city-wide event where folks get the chance to turn a parking space into a little work of art. Best of my knowledge, nobody from Wallingford participated last year (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'd love to see that change. Here's the deets on the upcoming deadline: Just a reminder that you have one week to submit your applications for PARK(ing) Day 2015! Applications are due on Friday, August 28. Don’t delay—the application is quick, easy,…
