Last Act for Kids on 45th Consignment Store?

Julie Martin March 7, 2020 22 Comments

You may remember how we welcomed Elise Worthy as the new owner of Kids on 45th back in 2017. Elise and team have transformed the store with a fresh look, new ways to consign and community events.

In the note sent to consignors below, Elise has made the difficult decision to step down and close the store at the end of March. Like Susan before her, she would love to pass the baton to a new owner and keep the store going. So, consider this an invitation! If you or someone else in the community would like to explore this …

Tight Turn, Wobbly Lines, Power Outage to Come

Jordan March 4, 2020 3 Comments

I was comfortably reading the Super Tuesday results in my jammies and slippers this morning when I heard a crash and, looking out the window, saw the electrical and Internet wires bouncing like a high-school “wave” science experiment.

I ran out the front door and saw an eighteen-wheeler making its way quickly down our narrow stretch of 4th Ave NE, making its get-away towards NE 40th Street. Glancing back at the electrical pole, I saw that it had apparently taken a tight turn and overestimated its clearance.

My wife, son and I all ran down the street to make sure …

Then and Now: 45th and Burke

Jordan March 3, 2020 3 Comments

An anonymous benefactor dropped a packet of photos of historical Wallingford on my porch over the weekend. I have my suspicions as to who it was, but until the culprit comes forward, I’ll just refer to them as Deep Tote.

I’ll post them all hear over the next couple of weeks, but this one’s the first, along with a photo of the same area from earlier this week.

You’ll recognize that big front window fronting Landon’s Real Estate as now showcasing the Lawless Financial Group office, although it appears the lovely double doors on the corner have been replaced, as …

Nickelsville Moving On (and needs your help)

Jordan March 1, 2020 101 Comments

The two-plus year sojourn of the Nickelsville homeless encampment on the City Light-owned lot at 3814 4th Ave NE is coming to end shortly.
March 31st is the day that the city permit authorizing the village officially expires and that the Nickelsville-led residents have agreed to vacate. After briefly pushing for March 21st (the first day of Spring, and thus probably-not-coincidentally the first day they could sweep the village without breaking the “No Winter Evictions” line), the City agreed to the later date in exchange for a written promise from Nickelsville and residents to peacefully vacate on the 31st. (Can…

Old French Fries in Dick’s Parking Lot

Ben Robinson February 28, 2020 5 Comments

It is a slow news day in the neighborhood which allows us to cover some lesser known aspects of the neighborhood.

Rover sent the editors an email about they new city guides for dog owners.  They have one for Seattle, and it is fine.  If you are new to the city, the information is great.  Taking a dog to eat at Norm’s is always fun.  However, Norms’s is not in the neighborhood and everyone knows about it.

It got me to thinking about the best kept dog hangouts in the neighborhood outside of the Woodland Park dog park.  There are …

Drag Lynx

A fun story ten years in the making came across Wallyhood’s inbox this morning.

In 2010, Wallyhood posted a story about a Craigslist ad asking for information about a car club at Lincoln High School (read the original story here).

A decade later, that ad paid off:

Hello! My name is Ray Guardiano, Class of 1974, Lincoln High. Ten years ago, you allowed me to post a request to your readers that I looking for any information on a Lincoln High car club from the late 50’s to the late 60’s known as the “Drag Lynx.” I have received no …
