On Valentine’s Day, Love Niles Peacock

Jack February 12, 2020 Comments are off

Haven’t filled out your Valentine’s Day plans just yet? Consider stopping by Niles Peacock Restaurant and Bar, 4025 Stone Way N. Not only can you enjoy a tasty bite to eat, but you’ll be spreading your love because Niles will be having a benefit for Family Works food bank here in our neighborhood. (Family Works is also a Wallyhood charity.)

On February 14, Niles Peacock will have a “featured menu,” and 50% of any selection made from that menu will go to the food bank. One dollar from every Violet Heart drink (featuring Tito’s Vodka) that Niles mixes will go …

Free Tax Help Available

Jack February 10, 2020 Comments are off

You’ve probably been receiving tax documents, from your employer and elsewhere recently, a reminder of the fact that tax season is just around the corner. I don’t think anyone would ever say that filing your federal taxes is easy, but free help is available from the United Way.

We received the following email from Abbie Watton, part of United Way of King County’s Free Tax Prep Campaign:

Did you know that 70% of Americans qualify for free tax prep services by IRS-certified volunteers?

This tax season, United Way of King County’s free tax preparation services are a convenient resource available …

Sisi Kay Thai Eatery & Bar: Delicious Renovation

Adam February 7, 2020 Comments are off

In mid-November I wrote a post lamenting the loss of May Restaurant and Lounge. However, that’s not quite right. Sisi Kay Thai Eatery & Bar (1612 N 45th) is actually a rebranded version of May Restaurant and still serves many of the same dishes (including May’s original Pad Thai). What a relief that this fantastic Pad Thai is still available in the neighborhood!

Michael Anthony, the GM of May Restaurant, now Sisi Kay, reached out to me with the following:

We’ve been running our Soft Opening since December 16th and support from the Community has been great!… Sisi …

Revisions to bus routes in Wallingford?

Mike Ruby February 1, 2020 23 Comments

Michael Ruby submitted this post about the bus route changes in the neighborhood.  It is a thorough summary with useful information and a few of his own opinions included.  Be sure to complete the linked survey to have your own opinions heard.

Metro has begun planning for the changes that will be made to all of the bus routes through Wallingford when the North Link lightrail stations open in the 3rd quarter of 2021 (July – September) at Brooklyn NE and NE 45th, Roosevelt NE and NE 65th, and Northgate. We’ll summarize it here but …

Jordan January 28, 2020 1 Comment

In honor of their 66th anniversary, Dick’s Drive-In will be serving up hamburgers and cheeseburgers at their 1954 prices today, Tuesday, January 28th.

“We were thrilled at the number of customers who came out to celebrate with us last year,” said Jasmine Donovan, President of Dick’s Drive-Ins and granddaughter of the namesake Dick Spady. “To ensure we are 100% ready to serve every customer who celebrates with us this year with great service, we’re splitting up the 19¢ days.”

So that means it’s 19¢ burgers at the Wallingford and Broadway locations today, Wednesday for the Lake City, Holman Road and …

Octopus Sixth Anniversary (at Changes and Murphy’s)

Jordan January 25, 2020 6 Comments

The Octopus, dislodged from its original home sandwiched between the now shuttered Guild Theaters, had hoped to re-open tonight in their new home on the corner of 45th and Bagley to mark their sixth anniversary. Unfortunately (and predictably), construction delays have pushed the re-opening out, according to co-owners Liza Danger and Trevor Marsh.

“We had to double the power to the building,” Trevor told me, “but when our electrician submitted the plans to the city, the reviewer had some issues with the designs. We escalated it to a senior reviewer, and the plans were ultimately approved, but the back-and-forth process …
