Take the FOMP Survey

Jordan January 23, 2020 35 Comments

Late last year, a group of neighborhood volunteers announced the formation of the Friends of Meridian Park (FOMP), an officially sanctioned “Friends of” of the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. They’ve been meeting and pulling together a set of recommendations and are hoping to get some public input on priorities. Would you mind taking this short, five question survey for them?

Take the Survey

From what I can tell, the big challenge with Meridian Park is the same one facing open spaces around Seattle: a growing homeless population, many of whom have mental and substance abuse problems, with nowhere to …

Red Door Closing

Jordan January 21, 2020 17 Comments

Add to the list of local businesses going out of business (Sunday’s New Business Roundup mentioned Alphabet Soup, Paper Delights, Crackerjack Contemporary Crafts and The Grizzled Wizard), The Red Door in Fremont has announced today they’ll be locking up for good soon, too:

Friends,
It is with great sadness that we share that we will be closing the Red Door at the end of our current lease, and our last day of business will be Sunday, March 8th.

We take our stewardship of this historic building and business seriously, but we just aren’t able to make it work financially. We …

Pork Onion Pan Fried Buns from Dumpling the Noodle

There are a few changes to Wallingford businesses in the new year. First, the good news. There are a slew of new places to eat and drink in the neighborhood this year:

Next up is Mediterranean restaurant Almanqal Grill in the old Bodrum Bistro spot at 1712 N 45th St. They serve fresh, hand-made Mediterranean food …

Art Installation Heralds Start of Big Sewer Project

Jack January 16, 2020 1 Comment

Beginning this year, Seattle Public Utilities will commence work on the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. The project will involve construction of a tunnel from Ballard to Wallingford with the ultimate goal of preventing sewage overflows into Puget Sound. While tunneling has yet to begin, the first step of the project, in our neighborhood, was taken late last year with the installation of a temporary and hard-to-find art exhibit at the Wallingford end of the tunnel. More on that later.

Over in Ballard near 24th Ave NW and Shilshole Ave NW, some work actually began in 2018 to prepare to …

Wallyhood: Top Ten Stories of 2019

Jack January 12, 2020 8 Comments

Once again this year, I’m rounding up the top ten stories from the past year ordered, as always, by unique page views. No single story walked away with the top spot by racking up tens of thousands of views; all the top posts received a few thousand views which is typical of a post on this site. Excluded are forum posts created by you, the readers. These can sometimes garner two or three thousand views, but while I’ve always limited the top ten list to actual articles, this year the forums have been unavailable for the past few months while…

Wassailing at Meridian Park Sat Jan 11, 2-3pm

Ben Robinson January 10, 2020 Comments are off

I just learned from Kimberly Christensen that the neighborhood has a tradition of wassailing to bless the apple trees.  It appears to have been working well as the trees continue to produce fruit for City Harvest.  This Saturday you can join in the wassailing and add to next year’s harvest.  The details from Kimberly follow:

Wallingford’s own Sound and Fury Morris Dancers invite you to Meridian Park on Saturday, January 11, to Wassail the apple trees.

Wassailing is an English tradition in which a community’s apple trees are blessed through singing, dancing and the scaring away of malevolent spirits. Wassails …
