Plan Ahead for July 4 at Gas Works

Jack July 2, 2019 4 Comments

It’s that time of year again when our neighborhood plays host to forty thousand or so people hoping to get a close up view of the Lake Union fireworks display (organized by Seafair and sponsored by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, as it was last year) on Independence Day at Gas Works Park. While this only comes once a year, it definitely has some impacts. Knowing what’s going on can help you navigate some of the inconveniences posed by this event. We received here at the blog a Community Notification from Michael McMorrow, Event Producer at Seafair. Says he:

Summer is Here, Wading Pool is Open

Ben Robinson June 28, 2019 Comments are off

The swallows to Capistrano. Naked Cyclists in Fremont. The wading pool at Wallingford play field. These are ways we mark the passing of time and the cycles of the seasons.

Enjoy the summer, but only enjoy the wading pool Wed-Fri, noon to 7pm through August 16th. In those off hours, you can enjoy the new play structure.…

Recycle with Northwest Center

daranee June 26, 2019 Comments are off

Are you channeling your inner Marie Kondo lately? Trying to minimize clutter in your home? Well, Wallingford has a pretty convenient option. Located right in the North Seattle Transfer Center is a Northwest Center donation truck.

The newish transfer center at 1350 N 34th St. is open 7 days a week. At the old transfer center building, I remember the Northwest Center truck being located outside in an adjacent parking lot. Not anymore. The truck is discreetly tucked inside in the same area where you go to recycle. While this is a much better location, many people don’t even know …

Surviving Climate Change Without Central Air in Seattle: Get a Whole House Fan

Eric June 24, 2019 4 Comments

Warning: This is going to read like a sponsored post. I’m just a “fan” of eco-solutions, and a whole house fan is one of those things that’s a win-win all around (see, it’s starting already).

Only about a third of Seattle households have air conditioning. Before the days of climate change, it really wasn’t necessary. After a couple 90 degree days in June, it’s tempting to give in and get central air conditioning installed, especially since the hottest months (and years) are yet to come.

Unfortunately, central air is very expensive to install and operate, plus all that electricity use …

Wallingford Playground Construction

Just in time for summertime play dates, Wallingford playground is opening on July 4th. We’ve been following the renovation of the playground since November of 2018 when construction first started. Construction was delayed in winter due to bad weather.

According to the Parks and Recreation website, the latest construction delays were due to the wood fiber surfacing delivery and installation. That will now happen on Saturday, June 29th. Once that is completed, the final construction and installations will be completed, and the playground will be open for business on July 4th.

There will be some fun happening next week though. …

We had so much fun last year, we are doing it again: Books and Ice Cream!
