Fatal Shooting at Wallingford Encampment Near Elementary School

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi January 28, 2023 5 Comments

I woke up this morning to a post from my 5 year old’s Parent Teacher Student Association letting parents know that there had been a fatal shooting within feet of our elementary school. I have spent the hours since wresting with the tension point between keeping my young children safe and becoming a full blown NIMBY (“not in my backyard”) rather than a humanitarian focused on communal well being.

Organized groups of people without permanent shelter are not new in Wallingford Seattle and my neighbor Gary wrote about it here on Wallyhood just a few months ago.

The 42nd and …

Closure of one block on Stone Way coming soon

Mike Ruby January 27, 2023 2 Comments

Wallyhood recently reported on a presentation to the Wallingford Community Council regarding the deep tunnel boring in south Wallingford, along the waterfront. The purpose of the tunnel is to create a storage tank for storm water so the West Point Treatment Plant in Discovery Park is not overwhelmed during a downpour and the mixture of storm water and residential waste water is not dumped out into the Ship Canal.

Back in the day when Wallingford was first developed it seemed like a very good idea to combine the residential waste water and rain water so the wastes would be diluted …

The Pies They Are A-Changin’: Northlake Tavern & Pizza House Closing January 31

DOUG. January 26, 2023 Comments are off

As astute readers of local and social media have probably discovered by now, The Northlake Tavern & Pizza House will close its doors on January 31, after 65 years of serving their unique style of pizza, overloaded with toppings, to UW students, alumni, and the neighborhood at large. In a January 7 Facebook post, the Northlake’s chef and owner, Abdoullah (who has been with the establishment for 42 years), stated that he is retiring “to focus on [his] current health issues.”

Wallingford pizza lovers need not despair, however, for after a brief closure for “clean-up, equipment replacement, and furnishing updates” …

That’s a Wrap! Guild 45th Theater to be fully demolished — makes way for 70-unit apartment building

Tyson Baty January 19, 2023 22 Comments

The curtain has finally lifted for the future of Wallingford’s iconic Guild 45th St. Theater — and what a plot twist: the space will be home to a new five-story, 70-unit apartment building. Surprisingly, no parking is to be included in the development of the building, yet some retail/commercial space is expected to end up on street level. The pink cinema is to be demolished in the near future, and hopes of current owner, 2929 Productions, (associated with billionaire Mark Cuban) repurposing the space as a theater are gone with the wind.

The Guild was built in 1921 as …
