Creatures of Wallyhood

The Coyotes eat the cats who eat the rats who eat the trash…but where do the crows fit in?

Being top of the food chain, Wally-humans may not fear for our own safety when we see a legged or winged predator, but a quick glance at any of the neighborhood facebook groups reminds us that we have a lot of opinions on the growing number of coyote sightings in the neighborhood.  A heated debate has emerged on the topic of outdoor cats — some fearing for the safety of their free-roaming feline friends and others essentially taking the side of …

Walking Wallingford’s Waterways

Julie Martin July 21, 2022 Comments are off

This post comes to us from neighbor Patricia Bannister.

Wallingford has 10 public access points to Lake Union. Yes, 10! And we explored each one on June 28 during a guided neighborhood tour that was organized as part of the Visions of Wallingford community filmmaking project.

Our tour leaders were Lee Raaen and Ted Hunter, who have been diligently studying the complex ownership and management of the 23 numbered waterways. These parcels of shoreline along Lake Union are partially intended to provide public access for the surrounding communities. Currently, they are managed by The Washington State Dept of National Resources, …

Street Smarts and Road Rage: Your Chance to Guide the City

Mike Ruby July 19, 2022 3 Comments

The Seattle Department of Transportation is offering a very unusual way for you to comment on traffic problems you may wish to see fixed in Wallingford. Do you want a way to safely cross Greenlake Way? Do you want faster traffic on N 45th so you don’t have to wait for pedestrians or stop at red lights? Do you want bicycle-only streets? Well, here is an opportunity to sound off.

Rather than some multiple-choice questionnaire they are offering an interactive map where you can leave comments specific to a particular location. First, go to their website by clicking here.  …

Hey! Wanna grab a drink? Yes, YOU!

It’s been a weird couple of years and we are eager to see our neighbors again!

Join Wallyhood writers and editors out back at Murphy’s for some appetizers, pitchers of beer and lots of neighborhood talk. Wallyhood is, after all, designed to elicit news, stories and gossip from the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle, and where better to get all that than on a pub patio in the summertime?!

Congratulations North Central Little League State Champions!

Julie Martin July 17, 2022 Comments are off

Congratulations to our own North Central Little League Seniors who won the Washington State tournament in Port Orchard, last Saturday. This combined team of 15-16 year olds from Northwest Little League, Ballard Little League, and North Central Little League played undefeated in the tournament.

The team now heads to Oakland, CA for the regional Little League All Stars Seniors competition next week. We also sent a combined Seniors team as Washington State Champs to Regionals in 2019.

NCLL is hosting a fundraiser to off-set travel costs. Please join us in the excitement by making a 100% tax-deductible donation. Any amount …

Wallyhood Exclusive: Geology Found in Wallingford!

Gary Shigenaka July 16, 2022 Comments are off

In East Wallingford, we are (mostly) accustomed to hearing a lot of typically urban sounds:  the ever-present roar of the Ship Canal Bridge; the booming clanks of garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup; the metallic buzz of sawzall tools as thieves steal your catalytic converter.  But this morning, I heard some unfamiliar sounds. It was hammering, and what sounded like the “plink” of aluminum baseball bats at a high school game.  I live across the street from the John Stanford International School (JSIS), and there were two men installing equipment with a lot of wires and other gear.  Mostly, I…

RVs Removed from Northlake Way

Jack July 15, 2022 10 Comments

For over a year now, RVs belonging to the otherwise homeless have been parked along Northlake Way between Dunn Lumber and Westward. This has led to the accumulation of much trash (which the city tried to clean up in February, as we wrote about here), but also events such as fires.

Now, the RVs have apparently been moved out. A reader writes:

I am writing because I am cautiously optimistic that the public health nightmare that was the long line of parked RVs has been permanently cleared from N Northlake Way. I am politically progressive but became acutely aware of …
