Broken Window at Fainting Goat Gelato

Julie Martin March 24, 2021 2 Comments

Some of you may have seen the window of Fainting Goat Gelato on 45th Street was broken by a rock last weekend. Fortunately, they are all patched back up, but they could use our support. I exchange messages with owner Yalcin Ataman and he expressed how the pandemic has impacted their business, making it harder to stay open.

I stopped by tonight to grab a couple of pints and remembered the neat connection to history they have – a creamery once occupied the space they are in. …

Celebrating the Historic Architecture Found in Wallingford

Survey Day!

If you see someone in a chartreuse vest carrying a clipboard in the neighborhood, it may well be a volunteer supporting the non-profit organization Historic Wallingford. Volunteers are recording styles and architectural details of homes in the part of Wallingford now being studied as a potential Historic District to be included in the National Register of Historic Places, an activity of the National Park Service.

The Wallingford community, as well as the city of Seattle, have benefited greatly from past historic preservation designations of key buildings and structures in our neighborhood. Notable are the Good Shepherd Center, The …

Fiesta Night! Support Local School & Business

Julie Martin March 20, 2021 Comments are off

If you are like me, Friday night often means supporting a local business and getting takeout. Next Friday night, we offer you a unique opportunity to start the weekend off with a great meal AND a chance to support Wallingford’s own St. Benedict School.

Thanks to Pecado Bueno (just down the road in Fremont) and It’s All Good Catering, you can order a delicious Mexican dish with fun additions such as a jug of margaritas or chocolate chip cookies (do I have your attention yet?) with 30% of the proceeds benefiting St. Ben’s.

Place your order using the instructions below …

Business Roundup March 2021

Adam March 14, 2021 3 Comments

As the Wallyhood blog emerges from hibernation, we are overdue for another roundup of business changes. This is a listing of all permanent openings and closings that I’ve noticed since March of 2020 (give or take a few months). The list of neighborhood businesses that closed their doors for good in 2020 is tragically long and they will certainly be missed.

Please leave a comment if you think any online business are missing from these lists or if you’d like to share your own experiences, thoughts, or memories.

Acadia (now Lassi & Spice) Bishops Cuts/Color (?) never re-opened after…

Gardening in Wallingford – Planning is the KEY!

Ellen Robinson March 12, 2021 Comments are off

After a long, dark winter and a Valentine’s Day snow storm, it is finally time to plan your garden! True vegetable growing die-hards, like me, are already getting our seeds started indoors. For those experienced gardeners and newbies less prepared, it’s time to get planning! My husband loves to quote John Wooden (basketball player/coach) saying,“When you fail to prepare, you’re preparing to fail”! March is the time to prepare for the growing season!

Edible gardening basics to for 2021 What to Plant When Crop selection is critical to early season success. March and April plantings should consist of…

Get Your Library Fix

librarian with book

The Wallingford branch of The Seattle Public Library, located at the corner of 45th and Woodlawn in the Solid Ground building, is still closed to the public due to the pandemic. Alas, we will be one of the last branches to reopen, due to tight spaces (hard to social distance) and other challenges with keeping patrons and staff safe and healthy. The Wallingford team misses the community and our regulars very much, and we are currently working at nearby locations.

So where can you get your library fix? You have many great options.

If you are in need of …

Wallingford’s New Community Fridge!

Megan Dulgar Okabayashi March 8, 2021 5 Comments

Take what you need. Give what you can.

During the pandemic, we have seen Free Little Libraries turned into food pantries and now our neighborhood joins others across Seattle in hosting a Seattle Community Fridge. Taking inspiration from cities like San Francisco and New York, Seattle Community Fridge places cheerfully painted refrigerators around the city. These refrigerators and their accompanying pantries offer free food for anyone facing food insecurity. The latest refrigerator popped up in Wallingford on Bagley Avenue, just off 45th Street. The Octopus Bar will provide the electricity, but this venture will truly be powered by our …
