Alphabet Soup Children’s Books hosted the rock’n local kid’s band, Recess Monkey, last Saturday March 6th. The news about the concert must have spread far and wide because this sweet little children’s bookstore was jam packed when we arrived a few minutes prior to set time.
I stood outside with about twenty other parents, bopping my head and tapping my feet to the boisterous rhythm as the band started off with Moon Boots, from their most recent album, The Final Funktier. My son, along with a few other kids, quickly and stealthily made his way inside, illustrating the amazing reptilian deftness that preschoolers have.
Every so often, I’d wiggle my way up to the front windows to get a peek at my son to make sure he was still there. I saw him jumping ecstatically when they started in on “Pet Shark,” his favorite Monkey song. There were many loud screams of “shark…look out!” coming from the crowd – from both kids and adults alike. They took the rowdy crowd through some oldies but goodies like “Down Down Down” and “Birthday Bite” and played the new tune “Booster Seat” that made me laugh out loud. The gracious band members even stayed after the show to chat with the kids and sign cds.
If you boogied down with Recess Monkey and are looking for another show or in case you missed it and want to experience the great local kid’s music scene, go check out Harmonica Pocket on Sunday April 10th at 11:30am as they celebrate Dr. Seuss with their special show, “Get Loose With Seuss.” And if you want to shake and stomp from inside the store, you might want to come a little early (although being outside was pretty cool, too.)

Alphabet Soup is the best! Glad to hear they had such a succesful event. We’re so lucky to have an independent children’s bookstore in the neighborhood. Parents, get down there and check it out with your kids if you haven’t already! Great space, wonderful selection of books, very child-friendly.
