Fathers, Nudity and Soccer

  • Post author:

Before you get any strange ideas, these are events this weekend, not a new ESPN2 show.  So grab your father, get nude and watch some soccer!

  • Fremont Fair– Ah, yes, the granddaddy of local weirdness and wonderfulness in an archaic embrace of the sun.  (Will the sun be a theoretical object of worship this year?).  Hours are Saturday 10 – 8, Sunday 11 – 6.  “Artistic highlights include craft and art booths, street performers, local bands, wacky decorated art cars, the free-spirited Solstice Parade produced by the Fremont Arts Council, and many other oddities“.
  • Solstice Parade:  The highlight of the Fremont Fair, this is Saturday at Noon in downtown Fremont.  Incredible floats and, it is rumored, nude bicyclists.
  • Solstice Pageant at Gas Works Park:  After the Parade head over to Gas Works for even more music, booths, food, and beer.  The party never ends!  Saturday, 2 – 6 PM.
  • Solstice Afterparty:  Wind down after the festivities at Om Culture at 2210 N. Pacific Street with parade videos, music, dancing, drinks, costumes and art.  Saturday 8 PM – 1 AM.
  • The World Cup:  If weirdness and wonderfulness in Fremont weren’t enough, the world’ biggest sporting event continues with many pubs and bars screening matches (Murphy’s and The Iron Bull come to mind locally).  The Phinney Neighborhood Center is also offering an interesting kid-friendly alternative with a big screen, face painting, food, and door prizes in case you don’t want to try to sneak your kids into a 21-and-over establishment.  Complete FIFA match lineup hereAll Weekend.
  • Wallingford Walks Architecture Tour:  Revel in the Craftsman beauty of our neighborhood’s historic houses and get informed on their features to impress your friends.  Sunday, meet in front of Tully’s at 1 PM.
  • Finally, Father’s Day was invented by a group of disgruntled Dads who didn’t know what all the fuss was about over Mother’s Day.  This is completely untrue but makes a good story.  If you’re still looking for a way to celebrate, I saw a sign on the new Pour House in Tangletown (where the Luau used to be) for a sweet-sounding $25 steak dinner special.  And give the big guy a hug.  Don’t Forget! Sunday!

Helen has lived in Wallingford for 16 years and think it’s the best neighborhood in Seattle, possibly the world. She has worn a track between her house, QFC and the library and spends a lot time poking her nose into things. She is a mother, does volunteer work and is interested in local, green and child-related issues. She has an advanced degree in English literature and thus reads a lot and enjoys the craft of writing. She also works part-time for her husband’s software company (doesn’t everyone have a software company around here?).
