I’ve been in there several times in the last couple of months, and have been very impressed with the range of desserts (and non-desserts — the sausage rolls are great lunch options), the quiet and pleasant atmosphere (somewhat like Kuan Yin, now that I think of it), and the hours — the place is open much longer than you would think.
In a time where desserts tend to fall into the overly-sweet (cupcakes and ice cream), I’ve found Hiroki’s fare to be refreshing — light and delicate, but very tasty. The ginger-pear biscuits are a personal favorite.
I agree with Ffej. I’ve been a local for only about 3 years but Hiroki has been one of my haunts. When I want to get away to some place different (no WiFi but cool Hawai’ian music – played not too loudly) this is where I go. Hiroki is usually behind the register and is happy to talk about his desserts. He reduces most recipe’s sugar content by 30% to start – so you actually *taste* what’s in the dessert and not just overwhelmed by sweetness.
The weekend is when the most variety of daily treats are around (the Orange Roll is my favorite) and there are more savory treats to be had.
For made-to-order pies/tarts/cakes I have never been dissatisfied and have been pleasantly surprised about desserts that I thought I was buying for “other people” – such as, I’m really picky about Pumpkin Pie due to the texture but Hiroki’s Pie was spot-on.
So, I recommend going, get some tea and a dessert and relaxing for a little while. It does me a world of good (or so my wife tells me when I come back from there.)
