Shalom Pole Dancing

Readers may remember that the Shalom House, the Jewish home for the cognitively disabled in Wallingford, closed its doors this past January and the house was put up for sale. Unfortunately, the building had been modified over the years in a somewhat institutional fashion, with odd additions and the upstairs cut up into many tiny rooms, some with linoleum floors. It didn't sell. Instead, it's become a rental house, and the neighborhood gossip is that the residents are feisty bunch of…

Gas Works Guerrilla Art Photos

Chris Witwer snapped some great photos of the guerilla art that appeared at Gas Works park yesterday: As a bonus, she also snapped a couple photos of art she found while looking for a produce sale down by 38th and Burke over the weekend: Perhaps not as splendid as the Gas Works art, but if Wallingford became known as the neighborhood of telephone pole art, we'd think wasn't such a bad thing. Update: Julie has posted a series of photos and…

Motel Crackdown

The City of Seattle issued a press release yesterday announcing they are cracking down on several notorious Aurora Ave motels, several of which are along the Wallingford / Fremont border (Wallingford Inn, Fremont Inn, Italia Motel and the Isabella Motel): The city of Seattle has taken action against the operators of five Aurora Avenue motels that have been the scene of drug-use, prostitution and other illegal behavior. Last week, the City Attorney’s Office filed 152 criminal charges for various tax violations.…

Just a reminder: close up your house when you go out, even on these remaining hot days we have. My Green Lake reports a daylight burglary, not an uncommon event in these parts, just over the Wallingford - Green Lake line: The perp climbed in through a window which was ajar; stole electronics including a laptop, alarm clock and dvd player. This is the second time in 1 year that our home has been robbed during the daytime. The burglary happened…

Guerilla Art in Gas Works

The Seattle Times reports that some guerilla art has shown up at Gas Works: In what was advertised as a gift to the citizens of Seattle, a gold-colored sculpture by an unknown artist turned up in Gas Works Park overnight. The papier-mâché guerrilla art sculpture consists of several pieces: a full-size gold-plated man standing on the waterfront surrounded by what appear to be shells, some with the heads of people emerging from them. "Anew is gifted to the citizens of Seattle…

Crossing Flags

Kelly sent in the following super-sweet note: I would like to recognize the efforts of a somewhat anonymous person who has taken the responsibility to organize our community to put crossing flags in Wallingford. I know who he is (but won't tell), but would like everyone to know that all of the flags and flag holders that you see along N. 40th St. have been put up, and paid for, by individuals who are concerned about the dangerous traffic conditions along…
