SeaMonstrosities

We first envisaged this blog as a sort of combination newspaper and gossip column for our neighborhood. We feel we've been fairly weak in the gossip department, though. Our apologies. In the hopes of righting this omission, we offer the following tale, as told to us, of the latest events at SeaMonster Lounge (2202 N 45th St). About a year ago, Andrew, the owner of the SeaMonster Lounge, sold it to Todd and Julio, who agreed to make regular payments. They…

A Field Guide to Plums

We know, at this point we're going to sound like some plum-obsessed fetishist, but we can't help it. There are so many ripe plums all over Wallingford, we gorge ourselves every time we step out and still there's room for more. One nice thing about the plum abundance is that there are so many different varieties, coming ripe at different times, so it seems like there will be no end of our plumocopia. We offer, therefore, Wallyhood's Field Guide to Plums,…

Kiddie Parade Banner Missing

Kate writes: I had two purple banners posted this year for the Kiddies Parade (July 11th) – one at 40th and Stone and one at 45th and the Freeway. They’ve been hung there for a month every year. This year, I went to go get them/pull them down, a few days after the parade, and they were GONE!!!! Who would take em? Who would want them? Seriously….. Wondering if anyone saw anything/anyone with some shears to cut them down? OF, if…

Invasion

This weekend saw a Star Wars invasion in front of Comics Dungeon (250 NE 45th St). Some photos we culled from the Twitterverse: (Photos by @OptiondD and @hhlodesign respectively) It was all part of their Anniversary Sale, which continues on through Tuesday, August 25th. Sorry we didn't give you the heads up, we didn't know!

John Ross, 1947 – 2009

We almost passed over a "Free Stuff" sign over Interlake and 42nd this Sunday, and would have been the worse for it. We didn't pick up any shirts or plates or records, but we did learn a little something about a Wallingford resident who recently passed away. The Estate Sale was over, and now, as the weekend waned, everything left was free. When we entered the house, it was fairly picked over, wires left hanging where appliances had been, but the…

Better than the Guild

The Guild 45th's marquee has always been a source of witty, occasionally snarky quips as subtitles to their movie names, but it seems someone got a bit too punchy this weekend. Beneath the marquee listing for the new Quentin Tarantino / Brad Pitt movie Inglorious Basterds was the line: Better than the Holocaust (Photo of the offending marquee in the Stranger's Slog.) The Guild hurriedly pulled down the sign and replaced it with something innocuous, posting an apology on their web…

Today’s Happenings

Reminder, the Pirates and Pipsqueaks kids carnvial is going on now until 5 pm in the parking light behind Solid Ground. Also, a reader tweeted that there's a designer streetwear sale going on at the top of Wallingford steps. And the sun is shining and you should get outside.
