We stopped in for a visit with human dynamo Adriana Medina of Fuerte Fitness (one of our sponsors) this past week and got some happy news: they're just 8 members away from being completely filled. In a time when we've seen several Wallingford businesses close their doors for good (e.g., Hollywood Video, Hard Hat Tools), it's great to see a new business do well. And yes, they are a new business, January is their one year anniversary, and they'll be celebrating…

Five Oranges

Open Books (2414 N 45th St) has a new piece of poetry in their window: (In memory of Bob Kondrak, a lively Wallingford presence and our friend) "Five Oranges" Nothing is lost. One by one the five big oranges in a low bowl on the oak floor disappeared, the five-petaled flower missing a petal each day... This morning one orange rests deep in its center, and the bowl turns to a blossom. -- Robert Sund

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of the month...and the year...and the decade! But it's really the month part that's important here, since that means the Wallingford Community Council will be meeting from 7 - 9 pm at the Good Shepherd Center, Room 202, as they do the first Wednesday of every month. This month, Park Superintendent Tim Gallagher will be the featured guest, so if you've got a question or comment on the parks, head on over. The public is welcome.…

Wallingford Photo Snaps Shut

Denny tipped us off that Wallingford Photo Center, the little photo shop in the basement of the Wallingford Center, closed its doors for good as of New Year's Eve. According to their web site, they've been there since 1986. They were also one of the sponsors for our first photo contest back in January 2009, for which we are very grateful. Sorry to see a good business go. Back in December, we speculated that we might see more shop closing after…

Welcome new sponsor: Green Cleaning Seattle

So maybe you're saying that none of our assumptions about your New Year's resolutions were true: no exercise regimen, no artistic flowering, no dive bars. Let's take one more guess: "Do less housework". Look, even if it weren't on your New Year's Resolution list, maybe it should have been. Life's too short. Which brings us to our newest sponsor, Green Cleaning Seattle, a group of local folks who are here to free your time and your conscience. Understanding that pouring and…

Sustainable Wallingford in the New Year

Cathy Tuttle writes: Sustainable Wallingford is growing into a group of friends and neighbors who are looking ahead to the time when we will need to live more locally and care about each other more compassionately.  Welcome to 2010! Sustainable Wallingford friends and neighbors will gather this Saturday, Jan 9, from 10-noon at Mosaic Community Coffeehouse at 4401 2nd Ave NE. When we hear the words climate change, peak oil, food security, downsizing, and local economy, we want to be part of…

Cutz Meridian salon (4515 Meridian Ave N)will be hosting an artist reception for Kathy Liao this Saturday, January 9th from 7 - 10 pm. Taiwanese-American artist Liao draws inspiration from her diverse Hakka Chinese and Japanese ancestries as she seeks to bring awareness to the Asian stereotypes that color her life experiences. Her works are often shaped by the dichotomy between Asian and American culture that she experienced throughout her formative years.
