Tour de Wallyhood

Being a mom of young kids, living in Wallingford is a gift. There are so many places you can go,  on foot or by bicycle, to amuse the little ones and yourself, as the winter days start to give everyone cabin fever. Just the other day, we made a solid two hour outing of walking around, doing a “tour de wallyhood” if you will. We were gone so long that the baby bjorn straps cut into my shoulders, creating semi-permanent grooves. Perhaps I…

InterConnection seeks old laptops for Haiti

  • Post author:

We've always been huge fans of InterConnection (down on Pacific near Gas Works) for their work refurbishing old computers for poor communities around the world, for providing job training for people here in Seattle and for selling really cheap used computers and parts to help finance those efforts. It should come as no surprise, then, that they're offering to pitch in how they can in response to the disaster in Haiti. Ally writes: In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti,…

Get Your Garden On

Seattle Tilth, housed in Wallingford's Good Shepherd Center, has a "dizzying" array of classes lined up for the next several months, on cold frames, goats, mushrooms, tools, perennial edibles and more. These classes do fill up, so if you're interested, sign up now. You're out of luck if you haven't signed up for the January 23rd Beekeeping 101 course yet, for example, but there's still time to sign up for the February 9th Beekeeping 101. They're also seeking a volunteer coordinator…

Bluegrass/Folk Jam Sessions: Mondays at Al’s

In an effort to escape the merciless downpours and warm up with a pint, my sister and I ducked into Al's Tavern (Corliss and 45th) around 9pm on Monday. Accustomed to seeing just a few bearded-and-flannelled men in their fifties and the occasional mutt stretched out under a booth on weekday nights, we were surprised to find the dive bar packed. Then, we heard the music. About five or six bluegrass/folk musicians had crammed themselves, several chairs, guitars, violins and what appeared…

Molly Moon was a girl scout

Ya can't make Scout Mint Ice Cream without genuine Girl Scout's Thin Mints, so Molly Moon's is offering to buy 'em from local scouts. To keep both her stores stocked through 2010, she says she'll need 4,500 boxes, which is enough to give us a stomach ache just thinking about it. Last year, her ice cream empire bought $18,000 worth of cookies and helped to send more than 30 girls to Girl Scout camp with “camperships” (scholarships earned by campers that…

Big Tree Bikes comes to Wallingford

When it rains, it pours. After years of no bike shop at all in Wallingford (anyone remember Bike Smith on 45th St? All that's left is an orphaned web site), Wallingford now has two, count them, TWO bike shops. A few months back, Speedy Reedy pedaled about 100' west across Stone Way, thus crossing over from Fremont into Wallingford (and leaving space for the fantastic Solsticio coffee shop to put down roots in its place). Now, Big Tree Bikes has taken…

Wallingford Pizza House

Finally checked out the Wallingford Pizza House on a recent Sunday evening, and now I'm wondering why it took me so long to swing by. The Wallingford Pizza House is proud to be Seattle's only classic Chicago Style Pizza House. They're located in a cute little old house (circa 1913) on 45th street, right between the two Guild 45th Theaters.  Our waiter was friendly and attentive while also being laid back in a really comfortable sort of way.  No hovering, no overly anxious…
