Wallingford 2.0

Jordan April 20, 2010 Comments are off

The ballots for the Seattle 2.0 awards, the local tech start-ups’ self-congratulatory but nonetheless respectable (and fun) version of the Oscars are open, and, in the “Best Start-Up Designer” category, we have a Wallingford vs. Wallingford showdown: Matt Lerner is the CTO of Front Seat, makers of Walkscore and City-Go-Round. Front Seat is a “civic software company”, specializing in socially progressive services that build communities (in the “real world” sense, not just in the “Facebook” sense). Matt has declined our frequent pleadings to write for Wallyhood, although his wisdom has found its way onto our pages. Aviel Ginzburg is the…

Neighboring ‘Hoods Roundup

Erin Leach-Kemon April 19, 2010 1 Comment

Wondering about the goings-on outside of Wallingford last week? Here’s a roundup of some of the highlights from our neighbor blogs:

Middle schooler speaks out against violence, YouTube-style: If you haven’t already, check out this 7th grader’s wonderfully creative video, which features random passersby around Green Lake and criticizes violent protests that have erupted in light of the recent health care reform. We really can learn from the children!

“$1,500 reward for lost E. Union pit bull puppy leads to armed robbery”: Wow…it’s not every day you see a headline like that. CHS Blog has the scoop. We hope Honey …

Bon Voyage, Matt!

Jordan April 19, 2010 1 Comment

You may have noticed that some Wallyhood stories are graced with some extra visual pizazz (e.g., A new classic at the Boys and Girls Club, Break Out Your Dancing Shoes, Is That Jazz? Festival). That’s the been the work of Wallyhood “staff photographer” (doesn’t that sound official?) Matt Mason, of MTM Photography.

Well, we’re sad to say that Matt’s hitting the road. Turns out when he’s not snapping photos around the hood or hefting merch over at Buddhaful, he’s twisting knobs as the sound guy for the band Seether, and they’re heading back out on tour.

So, we’re sad to …

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary…

Do you have a garden you’d love to show off? The Wallingford Neighborhood Office hopes to add a few more gardens to the 2010 Wallingford Garden Tour and would love to hear from you if you’re interested in making your garden available to neighbors on June 6th.  Jennifer Veninga, the Chair of the Tour, says:  “It would be great to get a garden with both ornamentals and edibles-as always the tour is low key; we want to include a variety of gardens.”

Gardeners can contact:

Jennifer, Chair of the Wallingford Garden Tour, via email:  jvenenga at msn dot com Janet…

Senior Center Breakfasting Again

Erin Leach-Kemon April 19, 2010 Comments are off

After announcing last month that their doors will remain open, the Wallingford Community Senior Center has steadily begun to rebuild.

The center has reached 20 percent of their fundraising goal toward an anonymously donated $25,000 Challenge Grant since ramping up efforts in March. Additionally, they’ve welcomed back two former programs and are gearing up to host a community-wide pancake breakfast later this month.

Kathleen Cromp of the Senior Center tells us that they have reached about $5,000 in donations so far and hope to reach their fundraising target in a few months.  Much of the thanks goes to Wallyhood readers …

La Boulangerie: A Tale of a Great Baker

Kendall April 19, 2010 25 Comments

For years, I have enjoyed the smell and sight of La Boulangerie on the corner of N. 45th and Bagley, known for its assortment of fresh baked French breads decoratively lining the shelves. The cases are filled with fresh croissants and pastries that serve to tempt the public. Xon Loung (pronounced Song Loong) is the master behind it all, and when I say master, I mean it. He is a one-man show, and that is nothing short of amazing.

The life of a baker is one filled with dedication and careful calculations. To produce exquisitely delicious bread on a regular …

Operation Beautify Report

Jordan April 18, 2010 3 Comments

Sounds like Operation Beautify Wallingford was a success. Kara Ceriello, the president of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce said over 45 people showed up (including a contingent of 25 kids from the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club), Cafe Appasionnato provided the fuel, Fainting Goat provided free scoops for the kids and half price scoops for the adults, and Councilman Mike O’Brien shmoozed with the throngs. Kara forwarded on these pictures of the action.
