Christmas Ships

Margaret December 24, 2010 9 Comments

Did you hear the singers on the Christmas Ship last night on Lake Union?  We did, and we live halfway on top of the hill!  It’s always a little (disconcerting?) hearing the voices at first, because we immediately think one of our kids got up out of bed and turned on the TV; and we freeze, trying to determine which of them will be busted until my husband asks, “Wait a minute, is that the Christmas Ship?” and I say, “Oh yeah, that’s right!”

Well, while we were enjoying the audio portion of the program, folks down in lower Wallingford …

Coffee and other necessities (what’s open, what’s not)

Margaret December 23, 2010 10 Comments

It never fails in my house on Christmas Day — either I’ll need some random ingredient for dinner, or we’ll be out of “x” (dog food, milk, or heaven forbid–wine) and my poor husband will be sent out on a quest in the middle of the day.  So, to make my life (and hopefully yours) easier, here’s a list of stores and whatnot that will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including the most important among life essentials:  coffee places.

QFC will be open on Christmas Eve until 6PM and they will be closed on Christmas Day.  The …

Mail Safety

Chris Witwer December 23, 2010 13 Comments

Wallyhood tipster Erin wrote to let us know about some mail theft in the neighborhood.  While she didn’t specify the exact location (I imagine she’s not in the mood to advertise her address!), we’d all be better off thinking about mail safety, particularly this week.  Here’s Erin’s note:

Hello,

Just wanted to give my fellow Wallingford neighbors a heads up about mail theft. I came home last night to find a box ripped open on our front porch, and the contents removed. The address on the box was for a family in Ballard. There was another package for my boyfriend …

Holiday eats in Wallingford (what’s open, what’s not)

Margaret December 23, 2010 5 Comments

A post in the Wallyhood Forums from reader Scarebaby prompted us to do some call-downs and find out which restaurants in Wallingford will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (don’t worry, we’ll do the same for New Years!).  Some restaurants open on Christmas Eve may have shorter hours, so you may wanna check out those we’ve listed below.  If you choose something more than a quick casual spot, reservations are highly recommended.  Here’s the scoop:

Open Christmas Eve

Julia’s (7AM-3PM)
Ivar’s Salmon House (11AM-8:15PM, lounge to 9PM)
Jhanjay Vegetarian Thai Cuisine (11AM-10PM)
Eva Restaurant (5PM-8:30PM)
Chutney’s Bistro (11AM-10PM)…

Updated (See Not A Number) Thursday, 1:20PM

It’s the Wednesday before Christmas and — c’mon, fess up — you still have to get some last minute gifts.  Well, fear not, neighbors, as we’ve put together a handy little guide for super-cool gifts found right here in Wallingford.  Best of all, they’re mostly around $20 or less!  Many thanks to Wallywriter Chris and Reader Laura who helped put the list together.

Amita, the Art of Gifts (Wallingford Center) Open 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. (10-6 Christmas Eve)  Amita has jewelry, handmade postage stamp magnets ($3), scarves, gloves, candles.  Really cute place, …

Boys and Girls Club Gets Kinect(ed)

Margaret December 22, 2010 1 Comment

Christmas came to the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club (WBGC) a few days early, thanks to a generous donation from Microsoft.  Yesterday, the club received an Xbox 360 with Kinect.  The software company donated the console and two games to 4,000 Boys and Girls Club locations nationwide.  As a special bonus, WBGC also received 13 additional Kinect games, courtesy of the Hotmail team, who shipped them using their new Active View feature.  Club members were invited to come and try out the new console and games like Kinect Adventures! on Tuesday afternoon and there were lots of smiles.

The Xbox …
