Last week, we reported that many businesses along 45th Street had been tagged with graffiti, and the comments that we received from our neighbors about coming together to clean up the mess inspired us to want to help out, too. So, we did a little digging and located Daniel Sims, the Seattle Public Utilities contact in charge of Graffiti Education and Outreach. Here’s what we learned from Daniel:
If you are interested in removing graffiti from private property, we offer paint, supplies, and a wagon to use for carting all your supplies. You can e-mail me at [email protected].

After living with an old, decrepit Safeway on Stone Way at N. 40th, followed by its demolition in 2006 and the festering pit left in its wake, it’s official: According to a spokesperson for Stoneway Village II, LLC, excavation will start next week for a new residential/retail building. We have a statement from one of the owners who provided us with some background behind the long wait and the details of the new building:
The “pit” and the old store were demolished back when there was going to be a new modern grocery store and a roof top condominium project …
SDOT is planning to finally stick it to 520 commuters this spring, to the proposed tune of $7 per day for peak commutes. Unfortunately, the Valhalla I fervently wished for was eliminated as an option, as they also plan to nail carpoolers- you know, those little buses that run for free. My interpretation is that carpoolers lack for a lobby that can push their point of view. They also aren’t extreme enough for either political party to pander to (Cars Bad! Cars Good! Nazi!)
Anyhow, if you’re Microsoft then your commute should be faster as the riff raff will be …

Sadly, we were not there to enjoy the discussion. Fortunately, though, Zach Lyons from the Farmers Market Association e-mailed us the list of sites under consideration. They are:
Lincoln High School lots (green): This is parking lot behind the Tilth, Smash, the Chili Pepper, etc. This seems like the best option to us, as it has lots of room. Apparently, though, the school kids use it in the afternoons, so maybe it’s no go.…As the weekend fast approaches, Wallyhood has been busy constructing a list of local happenings. Let’s hope the weather cooperates and we’ll get to see some more of that fiery ball in the sky. Happy weekend, Wallingford!

Wallingford neighbor and photographer Nancy Treder attended the ceremony for the snazzy new playground, and she was kind enough to send us the following report and set of photos. Take it away, Nancy, and thank you!
