Exploring Wallingford Together
Those at Historic Wallingford appreciate the support and enthusiasm from participants of the three Exploring Wallingford Together guided tours that have already taken place this spring and summer. There is one more opportunity to join a tour led by architectural historians Sarah J. Martin and Thomas Veith. This coming Tuesday, August 18th at 6pm the final tour of 2026 will commence at the Animal Storm Sculpture at the corner of N 45th Street and Wallingford Avenue N. There are a few spaces left; registration and a $10 fee are required. Each historian will guide a group allowing for an intimate exchange. Find more about the tour and register here. Beyond Acknowledgement: Indigenous Wallingford Futures
Another ongoing initiative undertaken by Historic Wallingford is titled: Beyond Acknowledgement: Indigenous Wallingford Futures: A Research initiative centering Indigenous histories and community futures. Starting in early June, a research team led by Dr. Alexandra Meany has scoured available archives to uncover information pertaining to the Indigenous activities in the area now known as Wallingford. A living reading list has been developed by the team and can be found here.
Locally you can find several of these books at Pacific Northwest Shop, 4411 Wallingford Avenue N. A shout-out to owner Matt Evans for supporting this project. PNW Shop carries a selection of Native American books and art images, alongside other Pacific Northwest titles, among the vast inventory of PNW gifts and treasures.
Also, Daniel Nguyen, Interim Northeast Regional Manager of the Seattle Public Library, shared that the Wallingford branch has only two titles of the list in the local branch collection. However many more are available through various formats throughout the Seattle Public Library system. If you know how to navigate this system already, you should be able to find what you are seeking. If not, stop at the branch at 1501 N 45th Street, and they can help you.
Actions based on this research initiative will roll out over the next year or so. Please join Historic Wallingford on September 18th and 19th at the Great Wallingford Bratwurst Festival at St. Benedict School. Historic Wallingford will be a vendor at the event, hopefully outside (weather permitting). Please stop by and chat about future steps for the Indigenous Research project.
