Seventeen years we've lived in Wallingford, and the first time we stepped through the door at Leny's Tavern was (oh, the shame) this past Tuesday. We were not disappointed: a fine selection of beer (available in pints or, for the unusually thirsty, liters), two pool tables, an excited buzz of activity, decent lighting and an exceptionally appealing bar menu. And the people? Well, let us tell you about the people. They're so kind they're holding a barbeque this Saturday, July 24th…

It was way back in March, 2009 that we first noted the ongoing problems Babalu has been having with the liquor control board (What did you do, Babalu?). You may remember that they ran afoul of the WSLCB by violating the spirit, if not the letter of the law requiring food be served alongside alcohol by serving $99 TV dinners. It seems Johnny Law has finally caught up with the star-crossed Mambo Room. The SeattleCrime blog reports that WLSCB records state…

New Feature: Wallingford Nightlife

Wallingford is a bit like the proverbial elephant described by blind men: each of us experiences our own segment of it, and we miss out on the rest. In the hopes of expanding all our horizons, Wallyhood is pleased to introduce a new feature: a Wallingford Nightlife Calendar. You can find it in our menu bar under "Calendars" (or follow the link above). We've got trivia nights, live music, tango and salsa, everything fun going on around the neighborhood after the…

Best Bloody Mary

  • Post author:

You know the thing we love about the Bloody Mary? It's different everywhere you go. Gin and tonic? It's gin, it's tonic, it's a twist of lime. Whiskey sour? Unlikely you'll say to yourself "wow, this is a really good whiskey sour!" But if you want to test a bartender's chops, taste the difference between a drink slinger and a beverage artist, a poseur and a potation potentate, a liquor ladler and a libation Liberace, you need something that has enough…

Grizzled Wizard

Our first clue came from Chuck: I just walked by a door marked Grizzled Wizard on 45th between the UPS store and the Erotic Bakery.  I did a bit of Google sleuthing and found a liquor license application by Savoy Foods and Joseph L. Couden.  But my investigative abilities end there.  Since you're a guy in the know, or at least a guy who knows guys in the know, would you be able to find out any more info? Always up…
