The Baker 10: Climbing for Cancer

Setting out to climb only one mountain in a lifetime may be just fine for some, but not for Ryan Tuttle. During his first "Climb for Cancer" last year, the Wallingford resident got to watch the sun rise from the top of Mt. Rainier, and raised nearly 10k for breast cancer research. The experience was so alluring, he wants to do it again; only this time, he's chosen Mt. Baker and has asked 9 of his friends to join him. The…

Little Free Libraries Take Root in Wallingford

This past summer, I spent too much time browsing the boards on Pinterest, and subsequently developed an infatuation for Little Free Libraries. The brainchild of a man in Wisconsin who built the first one as a tribute to his late mother (a librarian), the concept has been spreading like wildfire. By July, there were enough local LFLs to merit a write-up in the Seattle Times. At the time of that article, no LFLs were recorded in Wallingford. I wanted to do…

Thwarting Jack Frost

The combination of rain and holiday lights going up always prompts me to think about our homeless neighbors. I can’t imagine sleeping outside in the cold and wet weather, or spending my days with the damp settling into every joint. I’ve worked in human services, so I know I am not alone! Many charitable souls think about…

Wallingford teens hold a food drive

Last year, when Grace and her sister and mom read Nicole Brodeur’s piece in the Seattle Times, “For some kids, cuts at nonprofit mean fewer meals”, it spurred an idea: “The article got my sister and I thinking, and decided with some friends to organize a food drive,” Grace wrote to me in an email. “We put up posters around the neighborhood and gave out over 100 flyers. We want everyone to participate in this food drive.” The food drive was such a…

Cups of Kindness

From what Wallyhood readers have shared this week, there were plenty of examples of visitors to our neighborhood not being their best selves during the Fourth of July celebrations. Fortunately, some of our smaller residents were inspired to acts of kindness on the Fourth. Which makes me, for one, proud to be a Wallingfordian. Wallingford residents Sebastian, age 8, and Sofi, age 5, hosted their fourth annual fundraiser for the Whale Museum at Friday Harbor on the afternoon of the 4th,…

Reusable Tote Bag Drive to Benefit FamilyWorks

This just in from Wallingford's romance writer and occasional (albeit, we wish more often) Wallyhood contributor, Kimberly Christensen: Did you know that the city of Seattle’s plastic bag ban goes into effect on July 1? This is great news for the Puget Sound and sea animals of all varieties. Plastic bags tend to end up in the ocean, where they can be mistaken for jellyfish and other food by turtles, sea lions, whales and birds. However, if you go grocery shopping…
