Helpin’ with the Hoopla

This is Juan -- a 17 year-old staff member at the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club -- covered in Cool Whip.  Juan has been a Boys and Girls Club member since he was 10 and last year, he became the youngest and newest counselor. You can see what sort of initiation the newly minted counselors endure. Creaming the counselor is only one of the many fun activities offered at the Halloween Hoopla, and this year the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club…

OmCulture Halloween Dance

The Halloween goings on have started to flow in. OmCulture (2210 N Pacific St), for example, has two, yes, count them two events going on Saturday 10/30. First, from 3:30 to 5:00 they have a Halloween version of their monthly Ecstatic Family Dance time: "Come dress up with your kids and dance the mystery, magic and adventure of Halloween! Green Halloween 2010

It’s that time of year to start planning your ghoulish Halloween events. Get in the Wallingford spirit and make it a Green Halloween?  This year Wallingford has made it easy for our community to partake in this nationwide phenomena.  Green Halloween will be occurring locally at Wallingford Center and other surrounding businesses, Sunday, October 31,  from 3-5pm. It will be easy to spot the businesses involved, as they'll have Green Halloween signs posted in their windows.  Businesses that are contributing to Green Halloween…

Wallyhood’s Pumpkin Carving Contest

Last year, a neighbor's teenage son from up the street made the coolest Mario Jack-o'-lantern I'd ever seen; and the more I looked around while trick or treating with the kids, the more super awesomely cool pumpkin carvings I saw.  We've definitely got some talented folk here in Wallingford. And now we'd like to put your pumpkin carving skills to the test with our first annual Wallyhood Pumpkin Carving Contest.  Our good friends over at Archie McPhee have put together some…

Archie McPhee’s out for blood

This is my favorite time of year to visit Archie McPhee.  I mean, where else can you go to stock up on Monster Bandages or Glow Zombie Devil Duckies? What's also cool is that this is the time of year when Archie McPhee wants your blood.  On Friday, October 29, the Puget Sound Blood Mobile will be at the store for the 17th Annual Blood Drive from 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  Each donor receives a "spooky" gift; plus those dressed…

Costume Swapsies!

Closet getting full with Halloween costumes that are either too small or too big? Perhaps you're just too tired of being a "sexy cat" year after year? Well, we know it's slightly beyond the neighborhood, but this is definitely worth mentioning:  in the spirit of promoting a Green Halloween , beginning this Friday, October 1, Whole Foods will be collecting gently used Halloween costumes for the National Costume Swap Day in exchange for a ticket to pick out a "new-to-you" costume…

Halloween Wrap-up

It sounds like everyone had a great Halloween. Kara from the Wallingford Chamber says Wallingford businesses had their best year yet, Hive Mind Halloween saw over 1,300 people come through and raised over $24,000 for Room to Read and Youngstown, and we saw kids out trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, just like they did back in our day, before people started believing the only safe place to go was the mall. In case you missed it, Paul Dorpat took photos and documented…
