Can Your Halloween Pin Win?

We were trolling through the Wallingford Center in search of mini cupcakes (they are hard to get hold of) when we happened upon this flier about a Halloween Pin Design Contest. Now, my daughter has a weird knack of winning contests.  She's won quite a few already as if sheer determination to win is enough.  Her eyes lit up and I could see her planning what to draw . . . . It's only fair, though, to have decent competition or…

Wading pool, library affected by proposed city budget

Mayor Mike McGinn released his proposed city budget for 2011 – 2012 on Monday, addressing the $67 million dollar shortfall in the City’s General Fund for 2011.  The proposed budget calls for the Wallingford wading pool to operate on a three day per week schedule next summer, similar to this year’s schedule.  The closest wading pool to operate seven days per week will be Green Lake. The proposed budget also calls for reducing “on-site librarian reference service in order to achieve…

SHARE Homeless Shelter coming to Gift of Grace Church

I found out last night from a neighbor that SHARE is opening an indoor homeless shelter at the Gift of Grace Lutheran Church in Wallingford (2102 North 40th Street). All their efforts are self-managed, run by the homeless members themselves. In addition, the organization…

Hamilton’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Hundreds of people--from neighbors, students and faculty, to Seattle Public School Board Members--came out during this gorgeous, cloudless morning for the ribbon cutting ceremony at Hamilton International Middle School.  Members from the Hamilton Marimba Band welcomed guests with a fun and festive piece called “Mardi Gras.” Principal Christopher Carter began the ceremony, thanking everyone involved and said he was thrilled to be leaving their temporary home at Lincoln High School,  “with all due respect,” he added with a wry grin. As…

Shake, Rattle and Roll at Izilla Toys

After a soggy opening day of the Wallingford Farmer's Market back in May our family ran for shelter inside the Wallingford Center to warm up with board games and free pizza at Izilla Toys' Family Game Night.  Their next Family Game night will be Wednesday, July 21st (again, during the Farmers Market) from 5-7 PM. Here's what we found:  Folks gathered around several tables reading instructions, shuffling cards and sorting game pieces.  There was a great assortment - here are some…
