Help design a new park at Woodlawn and 35th

While every cloud may have a silver lining, every dump must have a pretty patch of green. This adage rings particularly true if the dump happens to be in our neighborhood, which is why the Wallingford Community Council (WCC) is working with a landscape designer and a Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) facilitator to create some green spaces adjacent to the newly-redesigned North Transfer Station (see map below). Would you like to volunteer to help design the space? Sure, c'mon, why not!…

Meeting tomorrow to discuss motel site on Aurora

Fremont and Wallingford residents who live close to the empty Thunderbird Motel/Fremont Inn on Aurora received letters from Catholic Community Services (CCS) about a meeting they're holding tomorrow (Wednesday, 7/13) to discuss the site's future. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm at the Fremont Abbey (4272 Fremont Avenue N.) Before it was sold in 2010, the Aurora Avenue motel had a long history of being a "chronic nuisance". The CCS letter provides some insight into their proposed plans of low-income housing:…

Wallingford Neighborhood Greenway Update

"Whaaat?" you ask. "I don't remember any discussion about a 'Neighborhood Greenway!' Nope, that's because back in January we told you that efforts were underway to plan and develop a bike boulevard in Wallingford, thanks to Cathy Tuttle of Spokespeople and SDOT (Seattle Department of Transportation) for funding. Well, a few things have changed since then, especially the term "bike boulevard" since this proposed dedicated east/west passageway applies not only to bicyclists but pedestrians as well, hence the new term: Neighborhood…

Neighborhood Projects applications due Tuesday

Take a look around Wallingford (though, I DO NOT recommend this during a torrential downpour).  Do you see any sidewalks that need repair, or any streets that would be safer with a traffic circle? The Department of Neighborhoods has what's known as Neighborhood Projects Funds (NPF) comprising both Neighborhood Street Funds and Cumulative Reserve Funds, totaling $1.2 million. These funds will be divvied up among chosen applications and will be spent in 2012 for neighborhood improvements for streets and parks. The…

Wallingford to get a bike boulevard

Wallingford will soon get a bike boulevard, thanks to the efforts of Cathy Tuttle, founder of Spokespeople--an organization dedicated to safe bicycling in Seattle.   A bike boulevard is a designated street on which bicycles have priority over motor vehicles, and bikes are free to use the middle of the street while the use of installed "traffic calming" techniques (signage, traffic circles, stop signs at intersections) force drivers to slow down, and be aware of bicyclists.  Bike boulevards are the foundation…
