Tour de Wallyhood

Being a mom of young kids, living in Wallingford is a gift. There are so many places you can go,  on foot or by bicycle, to amuse the little ones and yourself, as the winter days start to give everyone cabin fever. Just the other day, we made a solid two hour outing of walking around, doing a “tour de wallyhood” if you will. We were gone so long that the baby bjorn straps cut into my shoulders, creating semi-permanent grooves. Perhaps I…

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of the month...and the year...and the decade! Notes from the Playground – Monkey Bars & Slippery Slopes

For those who were interested in "the case of the missing monkey bars" at Wallingford Playfield, Mandy sent in this update from Seattle Parks and Recreation. Plus, a bonus update on the "slippery slope" that we featured earlier in the fall. We'll try to keep in touch with the Parks Department and provide additional updates as winter turns to spring. Thanks for this info Mandy! In response to Mandy's email, Seattle Parks and Recreation says... The climbing arch was removed because, during a regular…

Notes from the Playground – Wannabe Trackster

I went for a run at the park a few weeks ago (before they put up that fence) and paid the price. I hadn’t done a lick of exercise since the new baby. Okay, so she’s not that new anymore, but she hasn’t hit the one year mark yet so I feel like I can still claim her as my exercise exemption. In any case, my pitiful twenty minute run left me hacking some major spittle and gave me a bad head cold.…

Can Fire

Alan writes: Here’s another “What have we sunk to?” item. Here are pics of the second trash can that has been burned up at Meridian Park by the restrooms. The first time it was just the lid. Someone couldn’t figure out that there are real fire receptacles available to have a bit of a fire in just across the park. That was a month or two ago. Now, someone has burned up the entire can, lid and all. Seems to me…

The Case of the Missing Monkey Bars

(Sharon's Notes from the Playground) I took my daughter to the park today – pretty typical excursion, baby swings, watching other babies, waving at shadows. All fun stuff for a 7 month old. After maybe fifteen minutes or so, we meandered around the big play structure and I was struck by something, or maybe more accurately, a lack of something: there was a big void where the monkey bars used to be. At first I thought I had just missed them.…
