Wallyhood 3.0

I feel like I've been personal enough on these pages over the years that this won't seem out of place. I lived in the same house in Wallingford, just across from the John Stanford International School (or Latona Elementary School, as it was named when I first…

Ben furloughed himself several months ago; Jordan, the founder of Wallyhood, has moved away, though he continues to be in touch now and then. Katy is contributing when possible. I’ve tried to maintain a minimal level of service…

As we wrote about back in May, SDOT has been improving the intersection at Midvale Ave and 45th (near Meowtropolitan). We are talking about the Birds and the Bees…Support the pollinators!

Our home gardens in the neighborhood provide support and habitat for birds and insects.  Choosing certain plants that support these “friends” can help you keep the “foes” of your garden to a minimum.   After spending time and energy getting your kitchen garden a.k.a. “Victory Garden” installed, there is nothing more frustrating that seeing crops being stressed by pests and impacting the harvest you have worked so hard to achieve.  Plant stress and insect damage can be minimized by building your…

Gardening in July is all about the water

June in Seattle started and ended the same way - with gray rainy skies!  We know where the term "June-uary" comes from I guess!  Here's to summer kicking into gear in the Northwest like it usually does (on July 5th).   The good news is that the gardens are happy and the gardeners are not tired of watering yet! Keeping your vegetable garden happy in the summer can be a chore.  The long stretches of hot dry weather are a challenge…

While talk of defunding the police department has drowned out all other budget news, there’s plenty of fiscal pain to go around as a result of decreased city tax revenues due to Covid 19. We learned recently that SDOT will be reining in some of their work here in our neighborhood: As of today, the City of Seattle and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) are putting a pause on many of our transportation projects, including the N 40th St spot bicycle…
