Kitaro Site Razed

It takes a long-ish memory to recall what, if anything, once stood near Molly Moon’s at 1624 N. 45th. In fact, it was Kitaro Bento Sushi (or is it Kitaro Sushi Bento?) that burned there almost eight and a half years ago as we wrote about here. While we have had periodic updates on the charred remains (Kitaro News Flash: It’s Still a Burned Out Shell), there has been little in the way of action at that property. But perhaps I’m…

Beans for the future

As challenging times continue across the city and the country, getting outside and digging in the dirt can provide a welcome change.  While planting a few seeds is not going to fix the world's problems, it can provide some solace and satisfaction on an individual level.   Remember the fairy tale about Jack and the Beanstalk?  Let's all be like Jack and plant some magic beans! Beans are a mainstay of the summer vegetable garden and they are great place to start…

Signs of the Times

The coronavirus quarantine has given me the opportunity to take more strolls through the neighborhood, and I'm always delighted by the little treasures I find. Here's a set of signs I came across today in southwestern Wallingford, each a little story in itself. I'm not going to say where I found them. You go look. Last Sunday, I came upon a little garden with an invitation to walk in it. It's a peaceful little meditation, worth the visit this Sunday afternoon,…

SPL Is Closed, But You Can Still Borrow from Little Libraries

The Seattle Public Library closed way back in March with the first stay-at-home order, putting the kibosh on all manner of activities at our libraries including at our own neighborhood branch on 45th St. The banner above the SPL website says the closure will last at least until May 31, the current end of King County’s Phase I, but this could, of course, be changed. (A second banner announces a closure on Monday, May 25 -- Memorial Day -- making it double-closed…

The eponymous Mike Dunn sent this report from Chris Huckins of Dunn Lumber of excitement this morning: This week’s Lake Union Dunn Promise Awards go to Luis Velazquez (Yard) and Ben Dominick (Yard). Luis spotted a Japanese balloon carried lantern landing on the roof of our common lot shed early in the morning (about 5 AM) of 5/14/2020. The lantern immediately caught the roof on fire. Luis alerted others in the yard, and Ben Dominick immediately contacted the fire department who…

Beyond the Tomato

As I walk around the neighborhood these days I see more and more edible garden beds popping up in parking strips, side yards and containers.  With more time at home folks are taking their chances in the garden which is great to see!  Almost everyone I know gets inspired to grow a few tomato plants at this time of the year - and why not?  Starter tomato plants are available in many stores around town and nothing beats a homegrown tomato! …
