If you have missed the nice cutover to Ballard via Green Lake Way, you may be in luck - partially, anyway. Sometime soon, they are planning to open one-way travel southbound on W Green Lake Way [still closed as of Monday, 3/1]. An updated Traffic Control Plan is being drafted to allow one-way travel southbound on W Green Lake Way for people driving to access the Lower Woodland Park Off-Leash area parking lot as well as the Tennis Court lot. Due…

The Octopus Bar Returns!

The pandemic has cooped us up in quarantine for over a year. With the days getting longer, we are growing itchy for a well-crafted cocktail and snack consumed on a patio! Soon, the Octopus Bar will join Murphy’s, Julia’s and Westward in offering pandemic-friendly dining for Wallyhood dwellers. Coming in March: The Octopus will offer indoor and outdoor seating via newly constructed “STREATERIES” on both Bagley and 45th!  Last year, the Octopus Bar bobbed just down the road to its new…

Wallyhood 3.0

As Jack's recent post, What Happened to Wallyhood?, alluded, I've bowed out from contributing to this blog. I want to apologize for the careless way I did it. A little explanation is in order. I feel like I've been personal enough on these pages over the years that this won't seem out of place. I lived in the same house in Wallingford, just across from the John Stanford International School (or Latona Elementary School, as it was named when I first…

COVID-19, with its attendant school closures and stay-at-home orders, has had a dramatic effect on all of our lives. Some people have way more time on their hands than ever before; some have way less. Here at Wallyhood, we’ve struggled to keep going. Ben furloughed himself several months ago; Jordan, the founder of Wallyhood, has moved away, though he continues to be in touch now and then. Katy is contributing when possible. I’ve tried to maintain a minimal level of service…

As we wrote about back in May, SDOT has been improving the intersection at Midvale Ave and 45th (near Meowtropolitan). The final phase of that work, to take place this weekend, will necessitate closing of part of 45th St.: SDOT is working towards the completion of Transit Spot Improvements and one of their final elements of this work is to move the overhead trolley wires to match the new road configuration.  King County Metro (KCM) will transfer the wires this weekend,…

We are talking about the Birds and the Bees…Support the pollinators!

Our home gardens in the neighborhood provide support and habitat for birds and insects.  Choosing certain plants that support these “friends” can help you keep the “foes” of your garden to a minimum.   After spending time and energy getting your kitchen garden a.k.a. “Victory Garden” installed, there is nothing more frustrating that seeing crops being stressed by pests and impacting the harvest you have worked so hard to achieve.  Plant stress and insect damage can be minimized by building your…
