Gardening in July is all about the water

June in Seattle started and ended the same way - with gray rainy skies!  We know where the term "June-uary" comes from I guess!  Here's to summer kicking into gear in the Northwest like it usually does (on July 5th).   The good news is that the gardens are happy and the gardeners are not tired of watering yet! Keeping your vegetable garden happy in the summer can be a chore.  The long stretches of hot dry weather are a challenge…

While talk of defunding the police department has drowned out all other budget news, there’s plenty of fiscal pain to go around as a result of decreased city tax revenues due to Covid 19. We learned recently that SDOT will be reining in some of their work here in our neighborhood: As of today, the City of Seattle and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) are putting a pause on many of our transportation projects, including the N 40th St spot bicycle…

On Saturday, June 13th, from 2 to 4 p.m., Wallingford and Fremont will play host to an epic dragon hunt! B.F. Day School has a yearly fun run/fundraiser for their students, to raise money for the PTSA and promote health and community among the students and families. We invite our neighbors to drop by and “take what you need, leave what you can.” The suggested donations are canned…

There was a large turnout on Sunday evening in support of Black Lives Matter at the intersection of N 45th St. and Stone Way N. The crowd was peaceful and well-masked, and the reception was overwhelmingly positive, given the number of drivers honking their support as they drove past. There are two more protests scheduled for this week, one on Wednesday, June 10th from 5:30-8 p.m., and one on Sunday, June 14th from 5:30-8 p.m.

For those living near 40th St. the first half of 2020 has seen an increased pace of construction to smooth sidewalks, improve pedestrian crossings and lay new asphalt. Along with those benefits, though, have come some necessary ills: noise, dust, traffic delays and detours for pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles alike. (Residents up near 50th St. have already endured a far longer period of the same. That work is now complete.) But the end is now in sight. We received word…
