As I did last year, I reviewed the analytics for this site to uncover the top ten stories of 2017 as judged by page views. While 2016’s top ten was spread rather widely across topics, it was clear that in 2017, HALA (the Housing Affordability and Livability Agenda) was what was on neighbors’ minds. Business openings and closing also figured prominently. I looked a little further down the list at the top 20 and 30 to confirm that, yeah, we still…

Here are a couple of PSAs to send out 2017 on a good note. If you're like me, you like to take Christmas decorations down on the last weekend of the year. If you're also like me, you wind up with a few strands of dead Christmas lights to deal with. You can recycle these at various locations around the city. The city has compiled a list of locations that will take them for recycling. Although there are none in the neighborhood,…

What to do about the housing and homelessness crisis in Seattle continues to be a contentious and difficult, yet pervasive, issue for our city. With the cold, harsh winter weather fully upon on us, it continues to be a hot topic, but it seems most people are relying on politicians and government agencies to come up with a solution. The recent news of Nickelsville moving into Wallingford has brought that conversation and debate to a hyper-local level, stirring up strong emotions,…

Friday Afternoon Tea

Let’s first get a couple of things straight. This article is not about a Friday afternoon tea; it’s about Friday Afternoon Tea which recently opened on Stone Way. And the other thing to realize is that many may not consider Friday Afternoon Tea to be a replacement for the Teahouse Kuan Yin which closed it’s doors last year. While Teahouse Kuan Yin had that very “lived in” feel that comes with being in its space literally for decades, Friday Afternoon Tea…

Olives For Sale

Second to pickles, I like olives. It's rare you get "local" olives, around these parts, but Rina over on 40th and Eastern gets us pretty close. She'll be selling her home-cured olives, in the Israeli-style, from her home to raise money for Women for Women International: As an Israeli, I am used to having olives on the table for every meal (whether it is breakfast, lunch or supper.) As an American, I tasted olives from many of the supermarkets, delicatessen stores…
