What to do when CS is happening?

Crazy shit (CS) was happening early Saturday morning, and I only learned about it when I was in the midst of it. What is the best way to keep informed when CS is happening? Are their good resources available for these sort of situations? The Saturday morning CS involved roughly 20 police cars, half a dozen state troopers, and a smattering of fire and ambulance informally cordoning off the area from roughly 45th and I5 down to the ship canal bridge, over…

Cleanout Under I-5

This is a bit dated, but a few weeks back, I came down that little bit of 5th Ave NE that runs alongside I-5 and passed a backhoe clearing out the homeless encampment and the bushes that were hiding it. I went by a few days later and snapped a few pictures of the cleared area. There was a bit of debris, including an old wifi router, a hypodermic needle and other odds and ends where the bushes and tents used…

The White Powder Mystery

Neighbors, I need your help to solve a mystery. I've been seeing splats of what appears to be a white powder on the sidewalks. Does anyone know what these are for? I tried searching online and came up with a lot of scary articles about bombs and anthrax, but I'm pretty sure this is something much more innocuous. My theory is that it is related to some game that kids are playing, but I really have no idea. Please speak up if…

This last Saturday morning the Wallingford Community Council (WCC) held an educational session entitled "Wallingford Educates Wallingford" for neighborhood residents.  This meeting was designed to update everyone on the details and status of Mayor Murray's HALA and Grand Bargain initiatives as well as the potential effects on Wallingford renters and property owners.  The meeting was held at the Hamilton Middle School, and I am happy to say that over 250 people were in attendance.  This large crowd was due mainly to the hard…

Following up after last weekend's Wallingford Community Council meeting, Wallingford Educates Wallingford (more on that in a later post), some West Wallingford/East Fremont neighbors are holding a meeting tonight, Jan 10th, from 6:30-9 at the Staybridge Suites on Aurora. Here's the agenda: No doubt many of you also attended WCC's "Wallingford Educates Wallingford" meeting.  WCC talked about its possible response to the City's re-zoning plan. Our January 10 meeting will focus on giving East Fremont/West Wallingford residents a chance to: 1.…

Ice Age

Strolling just beyond the northern border of Wallingford this weekend, I came across a man attempting to cross a frozen 250 foot span between two of the docks at the Green Lake Aqua Theater. He got about 30 feet out when his friend on the shore yelled, "What are you doing? Come back!" The man thought better of his traverse and returned to solid ground, though he defiantly declared, "I would have made it!" As he walked past me I noticed…

Blackout

It's a whopper of a power outage, according to Seattle City Light's outage map, from Green Lake up to Capitol Hill and from Fremont over to Laurelhurst, impacting over 20,000 people. According to the city, the power is likely to stay off until around 6 pm tonight. I haven't heard word on the cause, yet, but folks all of Wallingford reported hearing a loud boom just as the power went out, so likely a transformer blowout. Update: Anita Elder says: "Komo news…
