Last Friday I had the opportunity to tour the new Wallingford Transfer Station.  On that day I wore two hats, one was that of a writer for Wallyhood.org and the other was that of a Wallingford Community Council board member.  The new transfer station can be summed up in one word - FANTASTIC!!!  The facility is surrounded by attractive landscaping, a playground, benches, work out stations, a basketball court and a super art sculpture made of reclaimed rebar. The design of the…

Wallyhood reader Cindy posted to our crime forum recently to report that her husband's motorcycle had been stolen. Though it has since been recovered -- albeit in damaged condition -- she took the time to write the following story for us, and offers these tips for protecting your own motorcycle. At the bottom of this article is a picture of both stolen cars and motorcycles in Wallingford in the month of November 2016 generated from the Seattle Police crime data website. …

In light of the fact that the original account of the incident referenced here has been removed from Facebook, I am removing it from here, as well. I am providing a quick summary of the facts for those you joining us late: On Thursday, a Wallingford mother posted an account on Facebook describing an incident in which an employee of a local electrical / solar installation firm yelled racist slurs at her African-American son and subsequently got in a physical altercation with…

With little fanfare, the North Transfer Station reopened its doors sometime in the past couple of days after a 2-year renovation. I'm pretty sure that their website noted that they were closed last Monday, so I think they opened Tuesday or Wednesday. Note that their hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 7 days per week. Apparently, I'm not the only one who has wondered what the tangled, orange mass was on the south side of the station. A sign now…

For those folks who aren't in the habit of following discussions in our forums, I thought I should highlight a discussion that recently took place in our Crime and Safety forum about some possible car breaks that may have taken place by activating or emulating the owner's key fob – essentially effecting an electronic entry, a break-in without the break. On November 19, wallingfordsince89 wrote: We truly believe our car was locked, but even so it was broken into overnight. It…

Beer Garden in November? Why, Yes!

Back in the good 'ole summertime, there were no issues or problems with sitting outdoors. The skies were clear, and the air was warm. Restaurants and bars set their tables along sidewalk spaces and in back patios which can be built by companies like Costimates, and we dined and drank to our hearts' content. Yes, I remember it well. But now, November has come, and winter is not far away. Most of those sidewalk tables have been packed away, and the…

Elementary School Season

The election and housing density are the main topics of conversation around the neighborhood.  Schools and education have played a part in those conversations, and it is school selection season.  So we thought this topic might be serve as a bit of breather from those heated topics.   As a parent of two young daughters, I am focusing primarily on the elementary school process as that is where I have the most experience.  For parents of older children, we at Wallyhood encourage…
