Vaxxed: From Coverup to Catastrophe, the anti-vaccination film directed by the discredited anti-vaccine activist Andrew Wakefield, will be showing all this week at the Guild 45th in Wallingford. Wakefield made headlines back in 1998 when he published a paper in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet demonstrating a connection between the MMR vaccine and autism. In 2010, the article was retracted by the Lancet in the light of evidence that Wakefield had fabricated data for his article and that he had…

My article that was posted on May 26, 2016 entitled "Wait a Minute - Raw Sewage in Lake Union?" received quite a few interesting and insightful comments and additional questions.  Apparently one of the readers of that article was Andy Ryan who is the Media Relations Coordinator for the Seattle Public Utilities and Andy was kind enough to provide us with some answers to the questions that were raised in the article and in some of the comments.  So I have…

HALA Should Develop Golf Courses and Cemeteries to Create New Walkable Neighborhoods

The effect of the upzone to urban villages that HALA proposes is clear as we have already seen it happen in Ballard. Older homes and apartments will be shredded and displace thousands, driving out current residents and turning neighborhoods into unlivable construction zones as the transformation takes place. Further, all the new people that move in will swamp our already overloaded transportation systems and schools, driving up property taxes as we try to catch up and further damaging housing affordability and…

Just saw this pop up on the Wallingford / Fremont Community Facebook page: I just received a text from that there is an armed person near Wallingford Park. Anyone know anything about this? and this response: We were just there for our last day of school gathering. People started shouting about an armed person on the field, so I grabbed my kids and left. Lichton Springs was having a field day. I didn't see anything, so I can't confirm. We left…

One of our family's favorite hallmarks of summer is Seattle's Annual "Night Out" - a city-wide event of local gatherings for the purpose of encouraging neighbors to come together and deter crime. In north Wallingford, this usually takes the form of good eats, cold drinks and kids on bicycles whizzing around a closed off street. I love the chance to get to know people who live in houses I pass by all of the time and hear about concerns or ideas…

MHA: The Mayor’s Path to Upzoning

If you are new to these conversations regarding the Mayor’s housing agenda, you may want to start with my first blog post for some background. The City Council is now considering legislation that will enact the Mandatory Housing Affordability program, known as MHA-R (the “R” is for “residential”). MHA is a part of HALA (the Mayor’s Housing Affordability and Livability Agenda).  The MHA program will enact “upzones” (i.e. it will allow extra development) in neighborhoods throughout the city, and in return will…

Coco’s House Opens in Shima Sushi Space

Many folks will fondly remember Shima Sushi located near the intersection of Wallingford and 45th which closed last year (Sayonara, Shima Sushi) due to difficulties with their lease. The owners also ran Hawaiian Breeze, located in the same building, which closed about the same time. The sushi space, sandwiched between an Edward Jones office and the Venetian Nail Spa (formerly Babalu) did not sit idle for long. Today, Tuesday, Coco's House throws open its doors for business. I sat down (well,…
